Needing Advice Asap!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I am in a panic....today was the first day of my diet (1 shake for bfast and 1 for lunch and for dinner a small to moderate meal.) Ok the moral of my story is that most people that I have talked to here and other places have said that this diet that I have started they usually don't start until 3-4 weeks pre op. So the reason i am freaking out is.....is this really ligit? do i really have to do this? who thinks that being on this diet for 6 months is way to long? I need help and advice please!

My bmi is 43.9

My weight is 288

I do have a medical card

I do not have much of any health problems...a little high bp, gerd and some arthritis.

(just some facts for everyone to go on)

Thanks in advance for the help and support! :)

6 months? No way. If you could stick to a diet like that for 6 months you wouldn't need surgery. Impossible. Are you sure?

Who is telling u to have 2 shakes a day and one meal for 6 months? Insurance or doctor? I had to do a one month PRE op diet. I was told this would help my liver to shrink. This would make the operation easier for the doc cause my liver would not be in the way as much.

After the surgery I was thankful for the PRE op diet, it helped me get use to eating less.

I would have had a horrible time doing your diet for 6 moths, one of the reasons we r having this operation is because we get too hungry on diets and we then fall off the wagon. My doctor said of course I can't lose this weight on my own, it is too slow and we get too hungry. So being on your diet for 6 months, it is good to change your habits but you will not be able to be perfect. If it is the doctors office requiring this maybe u should have a 2nd consultation. Good luck.

I don't think it's ridiculous at all. I think more surgeons and programs should require something like it.

I did my own diet and exercise program for almost four months before surgery and lost 40 lbs. Makes recovery a lot easier.

I believe in following the Doctors orders, but Raven is right, if you can stick with that diet for 6 months, you wouldn't need surgery...Sounds like an insurance company to me.

my insurance required 6 month NUT visits and to follow their meal plans which i did not as strict as ishould have. my pre op requirement is 10 days which ends tomorrow but i would def double check w;/ insurance and surgeons office as to how much they want you to lose because thats usually why they make you diet for so long. to show that you are committed to the lifestyle change and being able to change your eating habits.

These are the doctors orders and yes I am sure I have the paper at home to go over. 1000 calorie diet is going to put my body in starvation mode and its not going to have a good outcome in my opinion. And yeah I am going to lose weight alright but its it healthy to eat only one small meal a day. I am so confused

I would get a second opinion from another surgeon. That is crazy to do that diet for 6 months.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
