Insurance For Medical Complications?

Recommended Posts

I am self pay, and I have heard that there is such as a thing as medical complication insurance if anything should happen after surgery.

Does anyone carry this or know who provides this?

Thanks!!

My doctor offered it to self-payers from a company called BLIS. Quite expensive so I didn't take it, but it covers all the most common complications.

I've been wrestling with getting BLIS as well, but Aaron is right, it's pretty expensive and we self pay folks (contrary to popular belief) are not made of money. So, it comes down to confidence and piece if mind. IF getting supplemental insurance gives you that extra piece of mind, get it. If you feel confident with how things stand, go without.

Like I said, I've got a few more days to decide and haven't really made up my mind yet.

But it's good to know there is something like BLIS out there for us to choose from.

I posted the same question under the insurance thread last week. Someone sent me the website (can't find it) of Four Corners Insurance. The number is 1-800-335-0611. I called and spoke with them very briefly. They sent me an email with info. I'll try to pm it to you. I think there is a policy one can purchase that covers up to 60 days post surgery. I want to say it was around $350.00 but I'm sure. I was in a ruch at the time. I meant to call back today and didn't get a chance. I want to be sure that I'm covered in some way directly after surgery. I'd like it to be longer than 60 days but I'll take what I can get.

Okay (had to find my paper on it)

BLIS bariatric surgical complication protection

15055 sw parkway, suite 170

Portland, OR 97224

503-342-2444

Bliscompany.com

The package for leaks, bleeding, infection & perforation is the highest price at $1376.02 (guess that .02 is really important)

Stenosis/ stricture is $216.14

Cardiopulmonary, thromboembolic is $546.77

And just as an FYI, I do not work for BLIS or anyone associated with BLIS.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
