I know that Lap-Band can go wrong inside you and need to be re-done. How long does VSG last, so to speak? Can you go many years without any complications? If the doctor x-rays you and sees no leaks, are you leak-free for life? What are the things that go wrong a year, two years or 5 or 10 years on?

Thank you!

Generally speaking EVERYTHING carries a risk. Having a VSG and going through 3 months without and leaks or complications I would have to say that statistically you should be at perhaps only slightly higher risk of stomach issues like leaking or other troubles. You have afterall drastically altered the form of the stomach from it's natural shape and function, redcing it's capacity so that it can hold less than it orginally could. Should you force feed yourself you CAN do damge to your stomach sleeved or not.

This all has to be taken along with the very real benefits of weight reduction and the possible elimmination of some health problems associated with obesety.

I think the long term results are really great. This is one of the wls surgeries with the least amount of complications. Since they aren't rerouting intestines, you don't have that extra complication to deal with. Since you don't have a lapband inside of you then you won't have to worry about slippage and other things that come with that. In my opinion, VSG has one of the least possbile complications. Like any other surgery they would do to you internally ( like a hernia repair or any other surgery) there could always be some potential thing that could happen later...but for the most part you heal and go on with life. I am 16 months out and I have not had any complications. It can happen but it is not (from what I have seen) the norm

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
