Newbie question - Nauseous when hungry?

Recommended Posts

I've been banded a little over two weeks and so far have had a great recovery. I've been sticking with the eating rules and am still in the liquids/cream Soups stage.

So to my question...I have a strange nauseous feeling this morning and have had it since getting out of bed, but I also feel REALLY HUNGRY, so I'm wondering if the nausea may be connected to being hungry?? (Unfortunately I wasn't one of the lucky ones that aren't hungry after surgery and I've been hungry enough to eat a baby elephant since the third day after surgery....I've resisted, but have been getting progressively more hungry every day.)....Anyway enough of my whining :-)

I've never experienced the combination of nausea and hunger before, but since everything with the band is new I wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this.

Thanks!

Lisa

Hi Lisa

I am a newbie too, and feel the same way. At about day three, the hunger started, and I am keeping a food journal to make sure I don't drink too many calories. As for the nausea, I only felt nausea and hunger together when I was pregnant. Are you taking any Vitamins or medicinces on an empty stomach or at night before you go to sleep? That might be the cause. You could try taking any medicine with some skim milk and see if that helps.

Good luck.

I had a fairly significant amount of nause for the first 3 weeks following my surgery. It was bad enough that my surgeon ended up giving me a prescription because he didn't want that nausea turning into full-fledged vomiting.

Looking back, I really don't believe I was getting enough Proteins or Vitamins, and that is what led to the nausea. How much Protein are you actually getting?

hi, i was just banded monday (09 Oct) and do have that nausea feeling. what i've been doing is having a 1/2 cup of SF Jello next to my night table and if i wake up starving i eat a spoon or 2 (the spoon is an old infant spoon from my daughter). i usually have about 1/3 to 1/2 of the container and it really helps me.

good luck!

When I was a newbie I also felt a weird nausea type feeling when hungry. Part of it was, just like you all have guessed, due to not having enough calories. But, I think a little of it was just because it took a couple weeks before my new tummy healed. Even though you're post-op by a few weeks, it still takes your insides awhile to get used to being operated on and to having the band in place. Unless the feeling actually makes you feel like getting sick then I'd say this is pretty normal. It went away for me and I never actually got sick from it. Protein Shakes will help get some good calories/protein into you without making your belly work too hard and should help relieve this feeling. Although I have to mention that during this phase soy-based Protein shakes seemed harder to digest so I stuck with whey-based protein shakes which are just as good and easier on your belly. Good luck all!

Thanks for all the input! I've added a new weirdness over the last couple of days...I get dizzy/lightheaded if I bend over then stand up too fast. I planted some new flowers this weekend and almost took a header into the bed when I stood up! :omg: ...looking at the two together you guys are right about not getting enough calories.

I'm terrified of snacking (sugary stuff between meals is my nemesis) so I've been having two Protein shakes a day and one bowl of Soup. I've been adding Protein to my Soups, so I think I'm getting enough protein, just not enough calories. Think I'll look into the sf/ff pudding today :-)

Thanks for helping out!

Lisa, I had the same problems. light headed, dizzy, come to find out I was not getting enough Water. I was becoming dehydrated. I called the Dr office and this is what they told me. I felt it difficult to drink all the water in the begining but you have to. I just forced myself to drink my 64 oz and within 2 days I felt better.

I had those symptoms too. DRINK more water!! The dizziness and light headedness are from lack of Water and it will help the nausea also. Unfortunately, my nausea went away and was replaced with unmistakable hunger.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
