Problem Drinking Protein Drinks

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on October 26th and I've just started adding back my Protein Drinks and I'm having a hard time. None of the ones I liked before surgery taste good to me, in fact one of them made me nauseous. Every time I take a sip of one it feels very uncomfortable going down, no matter how small it is. I don't have any trouble getting liquids, broth, or cream Soups down. Has anyone else had this trouble. I'm afraid about not getting in enough Protein.< /p>

Hi, I'm not sleeved yet but have read on here that a lot of folks' tastes change after surgery. Have you considered buying an unflavored Protein mix? I guess you can mix it with broth, juice, puddings, yogurt and other stuffs. I plan on buying some Unjury brand to use after my surgery. You can buy single serve packets to try before spending the big bucks on the canister. They have a website if you're interested. I'm sure there are other brands as well that may be cheaper. Good Luck!

I have been sleeved for a little over 4 weeks and I have to agree, most of those Protein drinks are NASTY!

I came across Premier Protein at Sams Club (costco carries it too) - it is AWESOME! It comes in vanilla, chocolate and strawberry and it is 30g of Protein, 160 calories, 3g of sugar and 5g of carbs for 11 ozs. I highly recommend you scoop some up. It is by far the best tasting Protein Drink on the market (in my opinion). Sometimes on the weekends, Sam's Club demos the Protein Drinks and you can try them before buying them! :)

I bought the individual packets from unjury too and a canister of unflavored to put in broth, yogurt etc. But the truth is...even the unflavored has a flavor. Hate to say it, but true.

Good Luck to you!

I'm still preop - but I've watched some of the youtube vids of people after surgery talking about how it's very uncomfortable for things to go down, that they can feel it very distinctly going down and it's not pleasant. Then those same people a week or so later are back on talking about how that subsided and it's back to normal now. It could be hard to take because of all the internal swelling of your stomach and the healing process, so just focus on getting in what you can and take your time. :)

(easy for a pre-op'er to say, huh?) GOOD LUCK!!!

Thanks for everyone's comments! I'll just keep trying, and I'm sure it will get better.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
