When To Try Bread

I am a month out today. Nut has me on soft food for another two weeks but I am sick and tired of chicken, tuna, eggs, turkey, and fish. Tol me to wait on Beans, but tried with no problem, also had a tiny bit of chili, no issues , ate real slow.When can I try a tiny piece of toast, I really would like to try and see what happens. When did everyone else try? Tomorrow I am at an all day training at work and they are having pizza, could I try a little bit of a topping, no bread. I am scared as I don;t want to get sick.

Regarding your lunch tomorrow, I would strongly suggest you take lunch with you, so you're not tempted to eat things that aren't going to be healthy choices for you.

I don't mean to be rude, or harsh, but....if you're not going to listen to your nutritionist about eating Beans (and/or chili), why are you worrying about trying bread? My advice would be to follow your nutritionist's instructions...to the letter...if you're truly worried about foods making you sick. If she/he hasn't said anything specific about bread, then don't try it until you've gotten clarification from your nutritionist. Asking a question like that on this site will get you a million answers, at least half of which will tell you its perfectly fine for you to eat whatever, whenever, because it didn't bother the person posting. The only opinion you should be concerned with is that of your nutritionist....because they're the only person you're paying to have an interest in your well-being.

I tried a canoli the other day and didn't have trouble but I'm allowed to eat everything now (I'm out ten or so weeks from surgery one and five weeks from surgery two). But they are a dense custard like bread that does not puff up in your stomach. I also had a Protein bar the other night that had something like a rice crispy in it. I think they puffed up in my stomach like bread would because I woke up a few hours after eating it and vomited for the first time from food.

I don't even consider bread as an option at this point because I worry about what it would do to my tummy. I don't like that bloated feeling that the bar gave me at all. But in your case, you are no where near as far out so you should be avoiding it entirely for some time. Your sleeve can still develop a leak at this point. You obviously haven't experienced a leak because you feel comfortable taking chances, but since I have, let me share with you that you don't want to experience one! Do what your nut says, or instead, perhaps stick a knitting needle down your back, into your lungs, and do this with only topical anesthesia....thats just one of the tortures a leak leads you to...and I'd say it would cure you of wanting to advance past your prescribed diet rather quickly. I didn't cheat for my leak....but I'll tell you, I certainly don't want to ever experience that torture again, so I stay on a very narrow path prescribed by my nutritionist!

One other thing....eating something you aren't supposed to or even something you are allowed (like that bar I tried) can lead (when it's a new food) to embarrassing issues like excessive gas, vomiting or diarrhea. That's something I personally prefer to experience at home, not in a work setting. Something to think about....

I strongly agree with Laura in reference to avoid the pizza and bring your own lunch. We need to concentrate on good nutrition and get rid of old bad habits. I would love to eat some good bread, but is that a food that is healthy? No so I made my sandwich with lettuce wrapped around it because this is my new way of eating:)

Thanks, you are right. I will bring something in. My NUT said when I see her 12 days I will be slowly reintroducing things. I think she said toast, but I will clarify when I see her on 11/16. I am really struggling with this four week soft foods, but I know eventually I will be able to eat other foods. Feel like I am mourning foods I used to eat, I know I need to change my mind set. Any suggestions on how to do this would be much appreciated.

On soft food fish was my go to meal. Salmon in particular. Are you somewhere where you can get it fresh? Salmon with a lemon caper garlic sauce....yummy!

Same for me, fish is my favorite right now. If you buy the parchment baking bags you can throw a fillet on top of a few soft veggies and top with lemon slices. This bakes up to make the softest most delicious fish that is really easy to tolerate for me (I baked mine with CANNED asparagus because it's so soft) and ate this over a couple of meals. Soooo good, and feels like "real food" but healthy and good Protein from the fish. Yum!

Kimba...you ARE mourning foods!! That is very much a part of the process of changing your relationship with food. You (we!) have to completely retool how we think about food, and how we experience it when we eat. In addition, you're going through a REAL period of withdrawal...just like you would if you quit drinking or doing drugs. If you would like to know more about that, I highly recommend "The End of Overeating"....that book played a huge role in my being able to change my relationship with food!!!

I also recommend you stick to what your Nut is telling you .. in my case I'm able to have a square inch of soft bread without issues, say with light philadelphia cheese, but everyone is different.. some people can eat eggs, I threw up twice trying... so everyone is different

This sounds great! I don't like salmon-I wish I did! So I'll try it with flounder! tuna tastes different to me still so I'm desperately in need of some fish options. When is shell fish permitted- shrimp, clams? On regular foods only? I don't see it anywhere in my diet package-just says "fish".

It it's good.. I used tillapia fillets, but I'm sure it would work with most any fish you like.....

I should have mentioned, about 375 for 20 to 25 minutes worked well for the tillapia and veggies in bag. (my fish was thawed)

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
