diamondkized 70 Posted November 4, 2012 i almost didnt want to chime in but i felt compelled to. i work in the bariatric department and i woulr rule against it. certain insurances will cover it but it is considered to be experimental. I thought about it at first due to the fact that it was basically turning the stomach inside out and you could resume normal activity soon but i havent heard enough positive feedback to even consider that route. to me it seems a bit unnatural to flip the stomach inside out for weight loss. i dont know- to each its own i guess. Bos123 221 Posted November 5, 2012 Thanks for your input guys. These are some concerns I had before Doing months of research and talking to experienced surgeons who have been doing them for years. It is a newer procedure in North America but has been done and studied for ten years now. Anyway it is not turning the stomach inside out, it is a fold that is sutured and completely reversible. Anyway thanks again, was hoping to hear from some of the folks on here who have had it done. Haven't heard from them in awhile and was wondering if there were any new ones lately:)
kyllfalcon 768 Posted November 5, 2012 My surgeon said it was at first considered reversible but they have since found it is not always. Seems the stomach doesn't want to return to its former shape. The purported reversibility was what at first attracted me. And my surgeon was very willing to perform it. But since it was not reversible, there was no reason to pursue it. And the surgeon did not feel that weight loss results were as good as with the sleeve.

I just recently filled out their health questionnaire in hopes of maybe getting Plication. I have a low bmi 30.6, so thought that maybe it'd be an option for me. There's also another surgeon, Dr. Cottam, who is a leader in the procedure using Endo-flip to guide the size and shape of the plication. I also just read a 12 year study on the Plication, it's done regularly in other countries (http://www.asir-journal.com/content/6/1/7) and they have some data on Cleveland Clinics website also. I'm really struggling as to what to do, I need to lose 50-60lbs and am not sure what procedure is best for that amount of weight lost. I do have support from my PCP, he knows I've lost/gained 20+years and just cannot maintain. Argghhh. My husband will not let me go to Mexico, he's just not good with that. So, I'll have to find a doctor in the US that will accept me as self-pay/low bmi. Just when I think I know for sure which procedure I want, I get second thoughts. Once you have VSG is there anything that you can never have done again, like an endoscopy or any testing that you can no longer ever have? It seems that Plication would make it impossible to ever get a scope down in your stomach again. Any thoughts??? Thanks!
chad2rad 491 Posted November 15, 2012 I heard the stomach folds can get infected or even necrotic Did not want that.
alley-gator 96 Posted November 22, 2012 I researched plication thoroughly before deciding on the sleeve. They don't turn the stomach inside out, they fold it over on itself and sew it...think of a pumpkin role. You can watch Dr. Cottam do it on YouTube, who is my surgeon BTW. We talked about it but they are finding that it is not reversible like they thought.... The stomach grows together over the stitches and there is a lot of scar tissue. If you really want to know about it, I suggest you go to sleeveplicationtalk.com or the lap band forums and look for the plication section. In the end, if it is not reversible, then sleeve is a much better option imo. 1 Tink22-sleeve reacted to this
dionysus69 29 Posted March 26, 2013 ITs the safest(less complications) least expensive and least invasive surgery and I had it done Mar 4th and LOVE IT!!! Down 24lbs without even trying!! The restriction is amazing i get full so easy on so little!! Its only new to the US as they have been doing them in south America for 12years and europe for about 8-9 years!! Great results too!! 2 Lalesia and Tink22-sleeve reacted to this
genepha 47 Posted March 27, 2013 I thought I replied to this but can't find it... Anyway - I had a banded plication Feb, 2011 and I'm currently preparing to be revised to a sleeve in June, 2013. I had good restriction for about 6-9 months and then after that, my stomach returned to almost normal size Good luck to you! Jenn

Did the sutures come out or did it just stretch?
genepha 47 Posted March 28, 2013 Why did that happen? Did the sutures come out or did it just stretch? My new doctor isn't sure. He knows from the endoscopy that my stomach wasn't sutured all the way down. He thinks this may have occurred because I was my other doctor's first patient and plication was fairly new here in the U.S. and there wasn't a standardized way to perform the plication at the time. I had good restriction for the first 6 months but after that my restriction lessened significantly. Supposedly, the plication is not the main surgery but the lapband is so people end up relying on the band and the band never worked great for me for a variety of reason. Anyway - I think it would be helpful to find people who've had the plication for at least 2+ years and see how they are progressing. I'm being way more cautious this time and doing a lot of research on the sleeve before I move forward with surgery. My band has to come out either way so that will happen for sure on June 24. Good luck to you in whatever you decided. Jenn
