New Here- Introduction

Recommended Posts

Hi guys! My name is Liz. i am 38, i have 3 kids (13, 12, and 5) and my husband is in the AF. This is my first post on VSG talk. I have been lurking on here for about 3-4 months and finally decided to create an account.

This summer some things happened that made me decide it was time to change my life. I had sleep apnea (and i was starting to feel the effects of it not being treated) and I was diagnosed with hypertension. I also realized on a camping trip with my family just how overweight and out of shape I was. My husband, kids and I went on a bike ride around the campground we were staying at. I quickly fell behind everyone and could not keep up. My heart was pounding out of my chest and I could barely breath. These things were my wake up call.

I have struggled with my weight since high school (I'm 38). I have come to the realization (and accepted thr fact) that I am never going to be able to lose a significant amount of weight and keep it off without some major help. So, in July I asked my PCM to put a referral in for me to see a bariatric surgeon.

I went to the seminar in early August and have been working through all of the required appointments since then. I have pretty much gotten everything done. I have to lose 10lb before I can meet with the nurse coordinator ( I have 4 to go while I hope to get rid of in the next week or two). And then I can make an appointment to see the surgeon.

I had hoped to have my surgery in December. However, I just found out one of the girls I work with is putting in her notice to leave at the end of November. I work in a small clinic and that leaves 2 of us to cover 5 days a week. I am nervous about this. I don't want to push off my surgery but I don't know how I can take off and leave my coworker there by herself (and I haven't told anyone at work that I am planning on having surgery). I would be ok with waiting until the first of January...but not really any later.

Anyway, I just wanted to come on and introduce myself. I have already learned so much just reading all of the posts on here. I look forward to getting to know some of you : )

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
