Why no caffiene?

Some research suggests it's a diuretic. You need all the help staying hydrated you can get post op.

There is also research saying it is not a diuretic, as long as it's taken in moderation. You have to be the judge.

I believe that it contributes to holding onto Water weight or being a diuretic, but I am not positive, BUT, I am allowed 2 cups of coffee per day...so I am allowed caffeine although I don't drink it.

I asked my surgeon that specifically since I'm a black iced tea lover, and he was totally cool with me having as much as I like. Not sure why others have a ban on it.

when asked about caffeine i can't help but think COKE..because that is what i love , well until surgery of course so thats why i said that about stretching the stomach because when i asked about coke the P.A at my surgeons said that . not sure about everything else tho

Thanks for the replies. I knew about the carbonation from having lapband. But there is a vitamin/amino acid/energy drink called Spark that I love and thought it would be great during recovery. It's a powder packet you mix in Water. But it has caffiene... I his wonder if that will hurt me. I'm going to bring some with me and show my surgeon. I hope he gives it a thumbs up. :)

Butterbean - most carbonated drinks are caffeine.

Not always true. Most orange sodas, Fanta flavors like strawberry and grape, root beers and of course the 7up/sprites are caffeine free

I was always a big root beer drinker, which has no caffeine. And I just started back drinking Decaf coffee last week after 6 months with no coffee, so when I read the initial post I had coffee on the brain.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
