Surgery In 1 Week..will I Regret This?

Recommended Posts

I had a thought today "omg my surgery is in 1 week, i,ll be sleeved this time next week"...I think i was in denial and now it is here. I'm so exited and know this is the right thing for me to do but apart of me wonders if ill look back a year from now and say I shouldn't have had the surgery....I know there is a chance of complications that may cause me to regret my decision but i've done my research and feel as ready and anyone can be before having a major operation. Is there anyone else who wondered the same thing before surgery and do you feel that you did the right thing? How long after surgery or what event took place when you said "yes, i'm glad i made the decision to have vsg". I ask when because i know life is rough after surgery for awhile and there are alot of people who think they made a mistake then later change there minds and are completely happy with their decision...ready or not the time has come........

I felt exactly as you do before my surgery. I thought about cancelling it but then realized that I have come too far and even though my insurance wouldn't pay and I was a self pay, I decided to go through with it. I had tried since I was 8 to lose weight and keep it off. I would lose and gain it right back. I knew I couldn't do this on my own. I just prayed to the good Lord and asked that his will be done and I wasn't even scared the morning of surgery. I knew there were serious risks but I also knew that I couldn't live like I was any longer. I was borderline diabetic and was on 2 BP medications. I had my thyroid ablated and was on Synthroid as well. The first night after surgery was rough. The weeks to follow at home were also rough for me. I had pain and stomach spasms. I started feeling myself maybe 2 1/2 months after surgery. I did regret it in the beginning but today I know it all was so worth it!! Some people don't have any problems at all. You may be one of them. Still, I feel so blessed to have had this surgery even if I had to pay for it. You will be fine!! You will be so glad you did this! Maybe not at first but later you will be. :) God Bless!

I was terrified before surgery! The night before I made peace with it. I put together my file with my POA's ect. And told myself I need to do this for the sake of my life! When I got to the hospital I just tried to be my normal joking self with everybody which really lightened the mood then the nurse asked if I was ready, I said Yeppers! Then all the sudden I woke up in recovery lol. I am 11 days post-op and feel amazing! They said walk as much as possible, so I did. They say drink 64oz and I set a timer and made sure I got it all in. I spent the last 4 days in Vegas and walked about 6mi a day! I am a huge believer in the walk/sip as often as you can! I am exhausted by 9pm but other than that I feel like I never had surgery!

I am 9 days post-op. Day 5 I had a complete meltdown. I cried all day, couldn't get off the couch. A total "oh my God, what have I done, I have ruined my life" kind of day. Then I talked with my best friend who was sleeved a year ago that evening and felt so much better. It is an emotional roller coaster. I know I'll have more days like that one, but today, four days later, I feel good and I'm happy with my decision and look forward to the life I will be able to have. I really think the liquid phase is the ultimate test of will. Once I got through that my mood definitely changed and things started looking up. It gets easier every day.

Good luck to you!

I think you are having normal, human emotions. I felt the same way. I think about it now, and I really feel like I was scared it would fail. I mean EVERY thing else had. What if I cut out half my stomach and i'm still fat? I got it done anyways. I hated myself for one week. Then, life started getting back to normal. I started moving better. I felt the weight coming off. Almost 8 months later, I have lost 87 pounds. I love to exercise (gasp)! I LOVE not having to shop in Women's World! I LOVE playing tag with my kids. I LOVE people telling me how great I look. It is not always easy and there is definitely a learning curve, but you can do it! Good luck!

thank yall so much for your answers..i feel better just hearing from other people and having my feeling validated!!!i dread life right after surgery but i'm a strong woman and i've been thru so much already in my life so i know i can get thru this and be happy on the other side.. I had back surgery in may and recovered as much as expected considering i have other herniated and bulging discs (another side effect of obesity) and i know in my heart that if i dont get a significant amount of weight off and keep it off forever than another back surgery will probably happen. not to mention my high bp which i have to take 2 meds for and pre diabetes. I have to have this surgery. I'll be sleeved this time next week..omg.. i still can't believe this!!!the future is bright

There will be times (especially in the beginning) where you may be filled with doubts and even some regret. After all...we have all loved to eat at one point or another and so it is hard to not fall back into old patterns. But now we are forced to find a new way. That will lead to some hard days and yet at the same time you will find yourself feeling better and stronger as you lose weight. Over time you will most likely come to feel that this was the best decision of your life. For me it most definitely has been!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
