Hi Mark,

CONGRATULATIONS!!! LET THE COUNT DOWN BEGIN!!!

How are you going after a week of Optifast? It was pretty ordinary, but I felt in pretty good health going into surgery because of it.

I was banded last Thursday at The Valley by Mr Chris Hensman. Mr Richard Gilhome assisted. Dr John Zubevich was the anaethetist. It was a bit rough to start with, but now at a week out, and I am feeling much better. You will do fine - the hospital and everyone involved were terrific!

Just a hint - I was very nauseous post op - I found out after I got home and reread the dietician notes that ice can upset your tummy - I had been chomping down the ice chips like a demon! After the first day post-op I recommend that you stick with the room-temp Water jug instead. Keep sipping as often as you can to keep you fluids up, as dehydration also makes you nauseous.

Hope to meet you at Bandworks on the 31st at Mulgrave. All the best, check in and let us know how you are going.

Cheers,

Anna.

Oops! Sorry the Bandworks meeting is on the 31st of October - I have edited above so as not to confuse anyone.

Bandworks is a lap band support group held at The Valley Private hospital in Mulgrave. It's on the last Tuesday of each month, from 7pm. Call Simone Van Der Schoot at the hospital on 9790 4293 for details. Looking forward to meeting you there, you should be well recovered by then.

Hope that you had fun at the wedding! Only a few days to go for the surgery now, so kick up your heels!!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
