Dr. Lopez & Dr. Osana Vs Dr. Lopez & Dr. Ortiz

Recommended Posts

Those of you who have used Dr. Lopez and Osana, VS Dr. Lopez and Dr. Ortiz, did you have a preference as to who was assisting with the surgery? I notice Lopez seems to be the only one that specifically states who will be assisting? Do you think it is important who is assisting? Was this part of your decision process? Also, those of you who had Lopez and Ortiz, were you happy? I am booked for the 3rd, and just got an e-mail from Ronda at ALighterMe that Dr. Osana has a family emergency and will not be able to be with Dr. Lopez when he performs my surgey. That Dr. Ortiz will be assisting instead. I am trying to be understanding of a family emergency, but I feel nervous about this. I was offered I could reschedule in Guadalajara?! I can't change my flights at this point, not to mention the extra costs I would incur on airfare alone!! Part of the reason I chose Lopez is because he and Osana are a team, they advertise themselves as such. I am wondering how many surgeries Lopez has performed with Ortiz, and how experienced Ortiz actually is. These are questions I e-mailed back to Ronda, and I expect an answer tomorrow, but this change is NOT what I expected to hear so close to my surgery. Am I freaking out for no reason? Does anyone have any information on Ortiz, or used him?

~Amy

Hi Amy,

I was sleeved in Tijuana by Dr. Lopez on Oct, 8th ....well really the 9th, because it was 1:30 in the morning,I was his 5th patient of the day. The morning of surgery Dr. Lopez and his wife made their rounds, checking in with all the patients, seeing if they had questions, etc. They were both very caring and compassionate. The Dr. decides which order his patients have surgery in, evidentaly it is the most complicated first. Surgeries started around noon, by 5:30 pm patient #3 was getting testy with the nurses and raising a stink. Unfortunatly the first 2 patients were very time consuming with abdominal hernia's, etc. I don't remember seeing Dr, Osana in the operating roomat 1:30 AM, but I do remember Dr. Ortiz being there when I woke up. He's very nice, somehow I get the feeling he's been assisting Dr, Lopez on quit a few surgeries. He was also the Dr. that came to the Marriot to take out our drains. ( I can't help but wonder if possibly Dr. Osana is pregnant??) They are a young couple after all.

Anyway I feel my surgery went well, although they still rushed me out of the hospital Wed, morning. I really could have used another day. They definately have very busy schedule to keep. The hospital was extremly clean (no frills and small rooms), the nuses were very effeciant and took good care of you. I just happened to land on a week that wasn't scheduled the best. I was very glad I scheduled 2 extra days at the Marriot before flying home. I think Dr. Lopez is a fantastic surgeon and you'll be fine with Dr. Ortiz as assisting surgeon.

I was sleeved on 11/25 with Dr. Ortiz assisting and he was great. I saw Dr. Ortiz as much post op as I did Dr. Lopez and for longer. He stopped by the night after surgery to check on me and he was the one who came to the hotel to remove my JP drain the night before we left and went over all of the post op teachings/diet/expectations/etc. He was very supportive and encouraging. Very nice professional kind man with a sense of humor, very personable. I'm an ER/ICU nurse so I have gotten a pretty good feel for physicians over time and he seems to be one of the all around good ones.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
