Attention All Post Opers!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Just went to my surgeon to sign the papers and was given a bunch of papers about what to do 2 weeks before surgery and then after. Bought the bariatric Vitamins and shakes for pre-op. I have been on this web site for over 4 months faithfully reading all the posts and comments. I thought I knew what I was getting into but now I am not sure. I am really confused. It seems I will be eating and drinking all day long the first 2 weeks after surgery. Then heaven only knows.

My husband is against this and said yesterday "Are you sure you want to do this?". Now I don't know. Since I left the doctors office I have done nothing but eat. Please help me.

Your feelings are so normal! I was so focused on getting insurance approval that when I finally did, I felt kind of lost!

I've been here every day since May (the week after my 1st appt) and have read and asked and researched and read some more. I, too, thought I was prepared and informed.

Then my nutritionist handed me a big PACKET about how to eat afterwards and I panicked and felt completely overwhelmed and lost! :o

But I kept reading and asking and researching, and I sit here today, 2 weeks post-op, looking forward to my doctor's appt tomorrow to see how much I've lost!!

I haven't even received my big OK from insurance yet and I'm very nervous and scared. I think it's normal. I just wanted you to know you're not alone in your fear :)

Post op I did one week of full liquids and on day 7 Clear Liquids than surgery. Well I am only 1 week post op, so far this week I was on liquids meaning things you can see though, I meet with my Dr tomorrow and he said i will start full liquids like cottage cheese, instant oatmeal, pudding, applesauce. But each doctor is different. I also felt a little overwhelmed. What is your reason behind not doing it?

I am almost 6 weeks post op and I eat pretty much anything I want.. albeit a lot less of it but still what I want... I just had my first salad last Saturday and it was GOOD... You will be fine, your fear is nothing that any of the rest of us didn't feel also... Just remember that your unhappiness with your current situation is what has driven you to this point and it is so worth it in the long run...

My best advice to you is to do everything your doctor, surgeon, and/or nutritionist recommend you do. If you do that, you should do just fine!

I wish you the best,

Laura

The first few weeks aren't easy, but they are worth it. Getting all your liquids in, especially newly sleeved is quite a challenge. You might feel like you are just drinking all day long and even with doing that there is a good chance that you still won't make your liquid requirement for the day (early on). I'm not saying that to discourage you, I'm saying that to prepare you.

That being said, isn't a couple of tough weeks worth it for the new-found freedom you will have once you've lost the weight? You are going to be healthier, stronger, lighter, more flexible, and won't be held back by your weight anymore.

You and your husband's concerns are legitimate, but think about what another five, ten, twenty years of being overweight will cost you in terms of quality of life, health, doctor bills etc... Personally I think a few tough weeks at the beginning were well worth it! I think most of us on here would agree.

Think about why you wanted to do this in the first place. Then decide for yourself. Be comfortable with your own choice (either way) and don't let anyone change your mind.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
