Daily Calorie Intake And Protein Bars

Recommended Posts

My question is what is the approximate daily calorie intake we are supposed to follow? I am only 1 month out and have about 500-600 calories a day, with most of the calories being from Protein drinks. Today is actually my one month post op and I didn't lose anything this week. I was surprised because I worked hard at my exercise and walking on the treadmill but I know the "stalls" do happen. I am not discouraged because I know the weight will eventually come off. I just wondered on the calorie intake? Any reply's would be great. I know the calorie intake right now is low for me because I am only a month out, but what about later down the road?

Also at what point can you eat most things? I ate a Protein Bar yesterday (about 3/4 of the bar). Maybe I should not be eating that so soon? It is a good way for me to get in my protien and the one I found is great. It is called Quest with 20G Protein. It has 5 grams of non Fiber carbs, 1gram of sugar and no trans fat. It has 170 calories. Someone else who had the surgery told me about these and they are really good. Most health food stores sell them. I purchased mine at GNC. I just hope I didn't eat this too soon?

Another question I have is how many ounces we eat. I eat about 2 to 2.5 oz at a time and that is all I can handle. Will it always be that way?

I'm 4 weeks out and I've been eating regular food for a while. I don't keep track of calories but I mostly eat Protein and very little fruit and carbs. I do have some Atkins Protein Bars but they have tons of carbs and sugars, so I haven't even bothered eating any of them. I do keep a running total of how much protein I've eaten. I'm also breastfeeding so I probably get in around 700-900 cals a day and about 60+grams of protein. Sorry I can't offer any advice :/

I love the chocolate Quest bars, and have one every day. At 4 months post-op, I'm still only able to eat between 2 and 3 oz at a meal. Sometimes less. I eat what I can, and add something high Protein if I'm running short late in the day. My daily calorie intake averages between 650 and 750, most days. Sometimes a little less, but I try to keep it above 600.

I am a big fan of pure protien bars. They have 20 grams of protien or greater. I try to stick to non carb veggies and meat the rest of the day. My Nut does not believe in just eating protien first. Wants me to put a variety on my plate and eat around the plate. IE a protien and veggie or carb together. She says ill have good success if I keep it more balanced. The pure protien bars have not caused me to crave other carbs. Just started regular food last couple of days tho. The bars really fill me up.

So far the 200 calorie bars have not caused me to stall. I don't want to eat so low calorie I kill my metabolism later. This is now a life long process. And I have never only eaten 800 to 1000 daily calories in my life. Ha!

Just wanted to say the Atkins bars only have about 3 net carbs, the entire point of Atkins is little to no sugars/carbs in their products, but some of the bars are high in calories so I only eat them on occasion. The day break bars have 150 calories the full Meal Replacement bars are about 200 calories.

I have not eaten ay Protein bars post sleeve purely because no interest yet. However, I might get interested in the low carb variety post sleeve. I used to like thin bars from trader joes and the ones that costco sells (quest?). Additionally, I used to be a big fan of cliff bars when I went on hard hikes or scrambles. Now I would not be so sure about Cliff bars because of the high sugar.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
