Pre Op Diet Started Today

Recommended Posts

I'm lactose intolerant and can't tolerate the Optifast shakes . Has anyone tried anything else or have had success with something else ? I was supposed to be doing this for 8 weeks but couldn't so dietician said to do a 1200 calorie diet plan which I've been doing . Weight loss is minimal though. Maybe 4 kilos in total .

My friend turned me on to Total Lean Lean Shakes sold at GNC. 25 gms of Protein, 170 cals, and lactose free. They are actually not bad!!! They are already made too...just refrigerate!

I put some chicken breasts in the crockpot with a jar of organic salsa. Let it cook down to where it shreds. My kids eat it with whole wheat tortillas and shredded cheese. I eat it just as the shredded meat with a teaspoon of Greek yogurt instead of sour cream!

Easy and yummy!

I also started my pre-op diet today with the same surgery date as you (November 12th). My diet is different though, I am only allowed Protein Shakes with a veggie or a fruit. Nothing else. Hopefully the two weeks will go by fast!

I have been at this pre-op diet for almost 1 week. I am finding it not too hard --- have had some headaches. I am sticking in Protein, veggies and fruit. I purchased the GNC 100% whey Protein Shakes but am not looking forward to drinking the. Anyone tried them?? I also have started to get a bit nervous about the surgery (11/7). I know I can do this and it is for the better -- but my nerves have started to set in.

For the headaches I have taken motrin but that will stop as of tomorrow as I can't take anything 1 week before surgery. Drink lots of fluid!!

I wanted to get the powders but none came in 25 grams protein with 6 grams of carb (technically I am not supposed to go over 5 carbs on my shake). I love how you mixed them..never even thought of that! Surprisingly, I don't have any headaches. I've gotten down to one big cup of coffee (down from 3) and 1 caffeine free soda...my second week I plan on having neither. I do however need advil for alot of back pain. I am going to DREAD giving that up next week!

Def nervous! But once it's done we will all be miserable for a couple of weeks probably and then start feeling way better! That's what I'm thinking in my head anyways... I was afraid to buy the whey protein just cuz of the name! haha Let me know once you tried them!

Oh and duh...just realized you bought the other protein..for some reason I thought you bought the kind I did. I may have to try them then if they taste decent.

Well I will let you know how they taste -- I got my blender all set up for tomorrow morning. We shall see. I am having terrible hip pain and also not looking forward to giving up the motrin. I know I will be much happier in a few weeks. I was feeling fine until this weekend. I guess since I am getting closer to the 7th the nerves have started to set in and we had that horrible Hurricane Sandy arrive and have not been out of the house since Saturday. Back to work tomorrow so I won't have too much time to be thinking about the nerves.

For the shakes they also recommended that I could add 1/2 frozen banana.< /p>

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
