Newbie-A Little About Me :)

Hi have been following this forum for awhile now and finally have my date Nov 19th so thought I'd drop a line. I'm 25yo girl been struggling mentally with my weight since I was 13 when y nana told me I had muffin tops in my bathing suit ( I was only 46kg) she was a big women who had in one slight comment passed on an obsession with weight with one tiny comment! Amazing and unsettling how easily people can influence you!

I started gaining weight when I was 18 and had various eating disorders/depression over the years until I had my beautiful children who through pregnancy I would not do anything silly to my body. After I've had both kids I gave up was tired of fighting a losing battle and began to focus on the kids until I was at the play centre with my toddler one day and all the thin mummy's were playing with there toddlers on the jumping castle and climbing frame and my little girl was lingering around them trying to be involved, completely broke my heart! So here I am for me and my kids to change my life, hope I didn't bore you all :-/

Good for you for making the decision to better your life and be a fun mommy for your babes. It is unsettling how just a small comment can change us and set us spiraling with obsessions regarding weight and food! A similar experience happened to me as well, leading me to abuse laxatives for years as a way to lose weight and maintain weight. My life revolved around my need to pop laxatives...at the worst, I was taking 9 at one time. Eventually, I broke myself from this cycle, but began ballooning up in weight. I chose the sleeve as a tool to help me gain control of my eating and my ballooning weight. I refuse to lose the battle!

We all need to be careful of what we say to children when their bodies are developing. You never know how one comment can forever change their life!

Best wishes to you on your new journey!

Hi alisha29, thanks for your reply!

Yes we do need to be very careful what we say to our children, I never moan about my weight or call myself fat around my kids as I don't want them thinking anything from it I just want them to grow up eating normally not thinking about what foods should or shouldn't be eating all day everyday..it's exhausting!

Glad to hear you got away from the laxatives it's very hard to give up an addiction and not take up another e.g food

Have you found the sleeve has helped with cravings? These are my biggest demons now and fighting constantly everyday to not eat bad things and losing often :(

I went through the same thing when I was little. My mom always made those kinds of comments and now does it to my kids. I know she means well because she's a nurse and has seen me go through so much, that she doesn't want my kids going through it too, but the comments are hurtful and they do last a long time. I stated very small most of my life because of her comments. I was 135 and I'm 5'7". I barely ate because I was so "scared" of getting "fat". But after having my kids and thyroid problems, gained a lot of weight. I never tell my daughters anything about their weight. My oldest is actually pretty small, but my youngest is built just like me and she could lose a little. I'm so scared they get like me but would never tell them anything mean. Sometimes I'll say, we all need to start eating right and get healthy. I know words hurt and that's why I try to change the words into a positive way. If only everyone knew how harsh words can be. I'm surprised I didn't have an eating disorder.

It's very hard worrying about eating the wrong foods all the time because it just means your thinking constantly about food and I would end up eating something I shouldn't, people don't realise the effect there comments have on us well meaning or not. I agree putting the message through positively I will be and leading by example as well! My mum is the opposite to your mum by the sounds of it she loves her food and eats very unhealthy where as her weight is causing health issues now and I'm not far behind, we are living with her at the moment while our house is being built and will let my daughter have anything she asks for cake, lollies ect drives me insane!! I'm happy to let my kids have a treat now and then but not all the time. Keep telling myself 3 mores months, 3 more months lol

My sleeve has stopped all cravings 95% of the time. I use to eat after 5 pm, often had food hangovers, ate chocolate to go to sleep. Very hard to stay on my preop diet. Now I eat what I am suppose to eat and I just don't crave food, the few times I have, I eat another 2-4 oz. of PROTIEN and it stops the craving. I was scared to have the surgery cause I have never been successful at losing the weight and keeping it off. I am no longer scared, this has been a great decision for me, I am shrinking and fitting into smaller clothes about every 2 weeks.

Thank you so much rose hips this gives me so much hope!! That must be such a wonderful feeling every 2 weeks I'm so happy for you.

I'm struggling big time on pre op, it's not the hunger or the taste of Optifast as I don't mind it! The cravings kill me as food is my emotional outlet especially when kids are going haywire on me. Need to find a new outlet!?

How are you? Ya know, a person can't be perfect on the PRE op, if we could we wouldn't need the surgery. Once you have the surgery you hopefully will not turn to food during those emotional times. I use to turn to food at the drop of any stress/conflict in my life. The reason I don't turn to food post surgery is because something has happened in me that makes me feel like I am "divorced" from food. There are so many rules, ie: can't drink for 30 min after eating, chew, chew, chew. I still get a little nausea at 10 weeks post op but I am glad cause it makes me not want to eat. I think I get nausea because I eat too fast, I am struggling, how can a person make 4oz of food last 20-30 minutes???

Once you get this surgery everything will change, and since you know you eat emotionally support groups are important for us to reduce this component for our long term success. Hang in there

Hi Rosehips. I'm good thanks, just finished my 3rd day of pre op and going ok so far..11 days to go arghh! Yes I've been reading a lot of people post ops comments and trying to prepare myself mentally for this massive life changing surgery. Like going out and celebrating special occasions ALWAYS revolve around food?! But the was the most exciting part!! So I'm already thinking of my partner and I anniversary in January like what are we going to do as we would always go out for a nice dinner somewhere at a fancy restaurant. That's good there is rules I need some routine although I'm probably going to take a long time to get used to it especially the no drinking with meals! Oh and I just remembered at Christmas me and my baby boy will be both starting on solids hehehe

How are you going? Still struggling or do you have your good and bad days? Have you found yourself more energised for exercise yet?

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
