Bipass Or Sleeve - Now I’M Confused

Recommended Posts

It's true the sleeve has not been around as long as the bypass surgery' date=' but I had read that it's essentially the same surgery that they've been using for decades for stomach cancer and ulcers.

Anyone else read this?[/quote']

A rule of thumb I used for choosing between sleeve and bypass is...if you like to get ur drink on go with the sleeve cuz with bypass there is a higher chance of ulcers if u drink alcohol as opposed to the sleeve....just a thought. Good luck!

I'm a wine collector so this was actually a big deal for me. A friend had the bypass (she and her husband are also collectors) and she just cant drink anymore. She's about a year out on her surgery and while it's worked wonders, she misses the wine tasting experience. We are also big foodies and I wanted to be able to still eat out and taste everything I wanted. She is limited because if it's sweet or fat she ends up dumping. So no Desserts at all (she won't take a bite) and no pate, lamb, gad she's got a long list. I didn't want that for myself.

I agree if I want a nice glass of IL Conte Mascato D'Asti I do not want problems afterwards. I wanted to be limited on my intake, but still be able to enjoy small amounts of foods I enjoy. :*)

My uncle, who was pushing 500lbs had the sleeve, and my aunt who was over 300lbs had RNY. He seemed to "bounce back" faster postoperative.

I wanna have as much AMMUNITION - because if I do the sleeve - and everything works - and let’s say I do have diabetes (not chubby related) I’ll be ok - If I have the RNY and still find myself diabetic (which I believe we will always be diabetic) I have to then go straight to injections - which, for me, is so difficult - I do it because I have to - but I am just hoping against insulin - not even sure what cycle that will/can create

Thank you for answering me and helping with this dialog everyone - I’m still confused - but it will end up being the decision we all make together (me and the hubby)

I feel like my team is pushing more for RNY. I get the distinct feeling that VSG is not very common here at all. Though, my surgeon has been very fair & unbiased in handing out info on the different surgical options. The only one he recommended against was banding, due to trending results. He did say that he was leaning towards RNY for me due to my overall amt of wt to lose & history of GERD, but that he would do whichever one I chose...& would wait until the results from all my referral appts came in to make his final recommendation.

My surgeon does rny/vsg/band

I think the argument is going to be rny because of a) amount to loose and 2) t2dm - and now I’m doing my research - the long term studies can’t be very long term as the vsg has only been 4-5 years approved therefor result studies about the remission of t2dm aren’t as readily available - whereas rny has a much longer history and therefor they can prove that result -

I’m conflicted

Sleeve has actually been around for almost 10 years in this country. I also saw excerpts of European studies where it's been done for quite a lot longer than here. I was inthe fence since the beginning, but now regardless of lack of studies, I will still do VSG. But, I also don't have diabetes. If I did, it may have more influence on my decision. This site has helped my choice immensely, I have to say.

It's actually been around much longer than 10 years here. I think I read 20-40+. It just wasn't called the sleeve. Just like people say the DS is new... It isn't. Just a different name.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
