Complication Signs And Symptoms- How'd You Know?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

I'm about to schedule my surgery date and would like to be completely informed...

I'm wondering what the signs and symptoms are of complications such as a leak. What are the red flags? Did you do something "wrong" that could have caused the complication? Are there certain things to avoid doing?

I'm concerned about getting a leak and want to make sure I do everything possible to prevent it from happening!

Thanks for your help!!

Most people know very quickly, but the most common things I see involve throwing up bile early post op and symptoms of infection (high fever, extreme pain in the affected area), but I've also read that people have had leaks discovered they didn't know they had. There are also a couple of sleevers here who had abcesses, etc. The most important thing is to follow your doctor's plan and to not be afraid to call the doctor if you have unexpected symptoms.

The risk is low, unless you're the one with the complication.

Good luck!

Well with mine, I had trouble breathing... I thought it was the pneumonia that I had the week before, but then my breathing became very shallow. I had severe pain in my LEFT shoulder and side. Then I had a racing pulse and fever.

I didn't do anything to "cause" this ... nor did the dr. My body rejected a staple. It was a total fluke. And I was "fixed" about 2 weeks after my surgery, but they never could get the total leak to stop, I still have a small one that I'm hoping closes soon.

I am one of the maybe 3% that this occurs with or to. Follow your dr's orders, do not over consume is what I hear commonly and don't over do it. That's about all I can advise. Speak to your dr. and his staff in regards to how to avoid it as well. And I pray your surgery goes as splendidly well as most seem to experience!

Best of luck! xx

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
