Advice Desperately Needed Re:surgery Date

Recommended Posts

I started my wls journey in June. Completed everything the end of August. Then the wait began. I did awesome in Sept----quit alcohol, started eating only 1 meal a day, had a positive attitude---lost 15 lbs and felt like I could conquer the world with my new vsg sleeve. My stupid insurance didn't approve me till Oct 23---yesterday. Well, being the flawed human I am, I lost it the end of Sept with all the stress of waiting and started back to my old bad habits---eating everything and anything, drinking alcohol, etc. Now I'm up 12 of those 15 lbs lost, so embarrassed of my self and the wls place gave me a choice of surgery dates. I was hoping for a few weeks to get mentally/physically prepared. Not going to happen. They have a date of Nov 6 available with the pre-op appt on Nov 1. That's next week. If I don't take it, (I booked it but am sorry I did), I will have to wait till the beginning of Dec. I feel like it would be better for me mentally to wait the extra month---my dh thinks I'm just making excuses and thinks I should go ahead with it. I really could use your input and throughs. Am I just making excuses, putting it off and being afraid??? I would value your opinion and thoughts a lot.

Take the leap and go for it! I had a little time to prepare for my surgery and instead of doing that I ate everything in sight and used the excuse that I was having surgery so I wouldn't be able to eat it for awhile. I gained 16lbs on my supervised diet... That was awful. Take the bill by the horn and live for yourself.

Wow, well I would want to do it sooner than later because you now see that you CAN loose weight but it is so difficult to keep it off. Once you loose this sleeve weight, hopefully it will be gone forever!!!!

I know you will make the right decision for you! I am thankful that you have a husband that is encouraging you, my husband has been a big encouragement through it all and I am so fortunate. Good luck!

(We all get nervous too when we near the surgery date and with it being so close, I am sure that is part of your concern. You will do fine!!!! Just lean on us here at the board to help you through the difficult times! Hugs!)

Your DH is right. You've been waiting this long for the surgery so now you have an opportunity to have it earlier. I'd just do it and begin your new journey ASAP. That way you won't gain anymore of your weight back. Take the next week to refocus yourself. You can do this.....Besides it gives you less time to be anxious about it. Before you know it, you will be sitting here on the big loser's bench with us..... YAAYYYYYYYYYY!

Stick with the 11/6 date. The cravings you have will go away and you'll lose more weight after your surgery than if you tried to diet all month and facing Thanksgiving, which is a few weeks away. Good luck!

I'd go with the earliest day you can get. Can you get one for tomorrow? :) it's never too soon to start being a better you.

Update: Well, the date choice was taken out of my hands. My boss will be out of town and I am the only other person here(I work at a church--my boss is the Pastor). So I've opted for Dec 3 as my date---my new birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm ok with this. I'm actually feeling very positive and ready to get moving with my walking to build up some endurance and starting on my Protein Shakes next week. I also made my first therapy appt for next week too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
