Surgery Center In The United States Or Hospital?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am soon to be sleeved and it seems that I may have the choice of a surgery center, which is located across the street from a large hospital or in an actual hospital.

I have thought of many pro's and con's to each environment. I am curious what your thoughts are!? Where did you have your procedure? How do you feel about going home the day of the procedure? I was also told this may be an option.

Thank you for sharing!!!

Best,

Sannah

I had mine in a surgery center as an outpatient. Checked in at 0700, surgery at 0900, walked out the door at 1430. A little tough getting in the car. No problems, was glad to be in my own bed with my doggies!

If I had the option, I would stay in the hospital for surgery and stay at least overnight if not longer. This is a major surgery. I think it would be best to be at a hospital setting where if god forbid anything went wrong or you had some sort of bad reaction, there would be people on hand immediately to deal with the situation.

My surgery was done in a surgery center, which I was fine with. As with your situation, there was a major hospital right across the street "just in case." My dad is a physician and he felt a surgery center was fine.

There is no way I would have felt comfortable having this as day surgery. This is a major surgery and complications do arise. Stay in the hospital/surgery center overnight where you have access to pain meds, IV fluids, anti-nausea meds, experienced staff watching over you, etc. This is YOUR LIFE you're dealing with - no time to quibble over 1 (or even 2) nights.

I like the idea of a surgery center for outpatient procedures, however I do not feel this is yet an outpateint procedure and should be done in a hosptial with at least a 1 or 2 night stay in the hospital so they can monitor you and make sure you are well enough to go home.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
