Trouble eating first week out - anyone else?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery one week ago tomorrow, and have been recouperating well. The problem is that I have no appetite. Well, rather nothing is appetizing. I get hungry, very, but find that I can stomach very little. When I do eat, I can only eat a small amount. Half of a yogurt or pudding cup, a 1/2 cup broth, 1/2 of a Protein Drink, etc. I noticed the past couple of days that I am developing horrible bad breath and that I have to lie down after doing something as simple as taking a shower. I think obviously I am not getting enough calories in.

For those of you who have gone through this, did it last? Can you maybe suggest some ideas of things to eat on full liquids. I never in a million years imagined that I would have such a problem.

Thank you!

Thanks Jack. I was starting to think I was doing things "wrong". Good to know this part of the normal process.

Please make sure you are dfrinking plenty of Water even if you have not eaten much. When you go into ketoacidosis you need to flush out those ketones quickly to prevent damage to the kidneys. So please force your self to drink water t/o the day at least 72oz per day since you are in ketoacidois.... make sure you do keep a good level of poatssium in...so blend a banana into a Protein Shake once a day. EmergenC is also a good source of Vitamins and minerals...it is liquid vitamins....you put an envelope in water and drink it slowly. It contains what you need in vitamins and minerals.

I drank tons of juice, apple juice and orange juiice. I found I wasn't hungry but when I became hungry watch out, I had to eat then and not later or I would get horrible stomach pains. I relied on my shakes, apple sauce, mash potatoes, Tomato Soup, etc, anything soft because I found I couldn't take anything other than that. Just take it easy and you will progress to normal foods again. I had my surgery august 23, 2006 and I definitely found my list of foods that I have a hard time eating and other things I can eat perfectly fine. Your body will tell you when it is hungry and you will find the right things to eat so you can heal and not be starved but let me tell you, someone called it "bandsters hell" because you are not filled yet and your basically going on the basic band restrictions. It will get better though, mine did as I'm sure other peoples did.

I went thru the same thing. Don't worry, it gets better and it will all be worth it. Count yourself lucky because I know of people that feel like they are starving all the time.

Make sure you're getting enough Protein, it will help with the energy levels and plenty of fluids to flush out those ketones.

This is absolutely normal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
