Had Endoscopy Today - It Wasn't Bad

Recommended Posts

I had my endoscopy (or EGD) today. It wasn't bad. Got the IV and was completely out for the procedure. Woke up in the recovery/holding area. All went well - no issues. No sore or scratchy throat after, but felt a bit loopy and tired for a good part of the day after. Took a nap when I got home. Oh, and my anesthesiologist was hot, so that was a bonus. :)

Does everyone have to have one? Never had one and have panic attacks whenever I even get CLOSE to a hospital.

Yes I believe it is pretty much a normal procedure. It isnt any big deal though because you literally dont remember anything.

A friend of mine had one today and her husband called and told me that when her dr was waking her up, she looked at him and said "You are so handsome" the dr said "Debbie, your husband is in here with you" she said "I dont care because you are so handsome!" haha She doesnt remember a thing!!!! Or so she says...... ahaha

I think it is pretty much standard - my gastro said they just want to make sure there aren't any surprises/issues before they do the surgery. I even came home with two pages of pictures. Pretty cool.

About how long does it take? I have mine next Tuesday and I think I may be more afraid if this than the actual surgery. Is it a conscious sedation or full knockout?

The procedure itself doesn't take more than 10-15 minutes I believe. The prep/recovery took a bit longer - I was there from about 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.

I met with the gastro last night and he took a history and explained the procedure.

Today I went to the surgery center and filled out paperwork, put on a lovely gown, cap and booties, gave a urine sample, got an IV inserted/had BP and sugar checked, waited in holding, talked to nurse, anesthesiologist and doctor who confirmed medical history, had procedure, and went to recovery. After endoscopy, met with the doctor who gave me a report with lost of pics and said everything was normal. Met with nurse who gave aftercare instructions (no driving for 24 hours, eat normal diet, etc.) and had some Water. Got dressed and went home (had car service to and from the procedure).

It went smoothly and everything was explained to me in detail and I was fully prepared by the staff. They were pleasant and the facility was excellent. So all in all, a good experience. I am sure you will be fine! :)

Oh and to actually answer your question - sorry - it was a full knockout. Out completely. The anesthesia made me feel a bit out of it for a couple hours. Took a nice nap afterward when I got home (a rare thing with two active kids).

They give you versed which does not actually knock you out completely but you won't remember anything (that is what it is designed to do). So it will be as if you are knocked out completely. I have mine tomorrow, they said the actual procedure is about 45 minutes start to finish but prep and waking up I should expect to be there a total of 2-3 hours.

I'm pretty sure I had propofol and I think I was completely out. When I woke up I was pretty loopy and felt kind of out of it for the rest of the day.

I had mine today they gave me demerall and versed I was awake but don't remember much at all. It wasn't terrible just some mild gagging at very first then no big deal I didn't really feel anything. Took about 30 minutes. I was out of it all day slept for like 4 hours when I got home. Still feel a little out of sorts but should be good by tomorrow.

I had one too. Dr said it was standard procedure for anyone that has acid reflux, which I do. It was easy breezy. The waiting was the pain in the butt! Had to be there 2 hours before and the whole procedure lasted 13 minutes!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
