Pre-Op Diet And Blood Glucose Levels

I was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a week and a half ago. Started my pre-op diet last Wednesday (2 Meal Replacement shakes and sensible meal.) Nutritionist and doctor said that most people see a big reduction in their glucose levels and some even go off their meds during the diet. Mine are still high. :( Anyone else have similar situation?

The nurse practitioner even told me to stop the metformin now due to a bleeding risk during surgery. (?) Seems odd, never heard that about metformin before.

Define high. What is your fasting blood sugar on average?

I'm off my Metformin too as well as most of the others. My fasting blood sugar is up from it's usual 125 to 145. Not panic time but definitely noticeable.

Around 315. This AM it was 360. I am following the diet to the letter (getting the no-sugar added shakes), not cheating, taking my metformin 2x a day. My levels generally get lower during the day, down into the mid 200-s. I did record a couple at 190 this weekend in the evening. I've only been testing about a week. And on the metformin for 1.5 weeks.

Of course, my levels could have been CRAZY high before I was diagnosed and they may actually be coming down. But, it just doesn't seem like that's happening. :(

I'm not sure if I have the same problem since I don't have a meter but I'm having a difficult time with the diet. I'm insulin resistant and had to stop my metformin in preparation for the surgery but I'm struggling with extremely low energy at the moment. The lack of metformin combined with a low carb, low calorie pre-op diet is painful for me. My bones actually hurt from the lack of energy. This has a lot to do with why I gained so much weight to begin with. I have extremely low energy and, therefore, difficulty functioning when I eat low carb and/or low calorie diets which in turns causes me to want to carb up for energy which in turn causes me to gain weight. It is a vicious cycle. I'm really hoping that the surgery helps me to overcome it although I am really struggling with the pre-op diet at the moment.

That's pretty high. They should have given you instructions about what numbers they are looking for and when to contact them. It probably wouldn't hurt to give the doctor a call and go over your blood sugar log so they can make a decision about how it should be handled. There are lots of medications besides Metformin they can use for treatment.

It's also possible that they're willing to go with the high numbers because they know the procedure is going to very soon and they'll come down once it happens. It can't hurt to call to let them know what's going on.

You are getting this done at the right time. I've been treating diabetes for 7 years and it's a losing battle. If I had gotten WLS sooner I would have saved myself a lot of discomfort and aggravation.

Thank you. I have my pre-op appointment with my surgeon this afternoon. I plan to ask him. I also have an appointment with my PCP (who diagnosed the diabetes) tomorrow AM. I'm definitely hoping for more guidance. The high numbers are scaring me.

I'm also concerned he won't do the surgery if my levels are this high. Hopefully an unfounded worry, but I'm an expert worrier!

Bring your blood sugar log to your appointments as well as your food log. Your doctor can compare what you are eating to your blood sugar numbers and try to see if there is something specific that needs to be changed.
