Do I really have to stay away from coffee for 3 months after surgery. Would I be able to get Decaf. Anyone know what the issue is with coffee

I was allowed to drink Decaf immediately after surgery. Well, within a week, once I was out of the clear liquid stage. I was told to stay away from caffeine, but decaf drinks were okay.

I wonder why each surgeon is different. My surgeon says no coffee for 3 months and not to even try Decaf because there is small amounts of caffeine in decaf.

I think the caffeine restriction is due to dehydration. I have been drinking Decaf (kcups at that!). No need to say goodbye to Keurig :-)

I'm happy to hear that some of you can still get their coffee so maybe I can sneak a cup in a few times. I'm a mocha fanatic and I know the mocha would be to much just yet but just a plain old coffee would satisfy me for a bit.

I was told no coffee for 1 month. I stayed away for a month but started drinking it in day 31 with no problems at all.

I was told Decaf as well, but the last couple of times I mixed some in with my Protein Shake, my stomach started to hurt, so I've left it alone for a while. If it doesn't bother your tummy, do decaf :)

Does anyone have problems with caffiene? If i drink coffe or tea or anything with caffiene it make me feels reslly really weird.. I feel like I cant handle it anymore since surgery. Does anyone else have this problem? Im jittery and just feel weird even if I have just a half a cup.

I was told no coffee for 1 month. Not even Decaf as coffee irritates the lining of the stomach. I was allowed decaf tea day 1 post-op. And its true, if you drink caffeine you would have to take in more fluids.

Just had my first cup of coffee a few days ago and no problems.

I have been having Ice coffee every morning for the past 2 weeks. It helps me with my energy and gets everything moving (if you know what I mean) I haven't had to take the Miralax or anything. I love it my NUT and DR said no problems just drink plenty of Water through the day.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
