My insurance covers 80% of the surgery. I'm scratching my head as to how to come up with the rest. Does the hospital bill you for the rest or does the doctor expect it before the surgery? This has not been discussed during any of my visits to the doctor's office, and an up-front fee was not charged.

What has been your experience?

You have to pay all copy's prior to the surgery. I had to pay over 900 to the doctor and 1200 to the hospital. I saved for months and it was a sacrifice but now at 6 weeks out I can say it was worth it

Call your surgeon tell them you need to know your part so you can start saving.

I believe they bill you after like with any operation after the insurance has covered their part.

Every insurance and hospital differ. I had to pay my $1000 out of pocket to the hospital before surgery but the surgeon billed me his part. It just depends on the program. Most of time if its elective surgery like the sleeve, you will have to pay your portion up front but not all doctors require that. I would ask your surgeons office so you know if you have to pay a portion before surgery. They would have the answers for you. Good luck!!

I had already met my out of pocket max for the year, BUT, the surgeon would have had me pay my portion if I was not 100% covered. I have not received the EOB so I do not know yet what my surgeon charged. Now, the hospital charged $67,386.81 but the insurance contracted rate was $23,261. Then there are various bills that have come in I guess from the MD's who were on call and stopped by and did nothing. Anesthesia bill was around $4500 but not discounted yet. Do you have a yearly out of pocket max?? That saved my butt. When is surgery? We are on the best plan my husband's company offers. It would have cost me WAY MORE if I was on the cheaper plan. I hope this somehow helps. :/

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
