Holy Canoli ... Am I Dumping?

Recommended Posts

Long story short:

4.5 weeks out from surgery. I ate lobster bisque (less than half a cup).

My heart started racing, I started sweating and my stomach is cramping. I feel soo sick right now.

I still feel like my heart is going to come out of my chest... what is happening to me? Has this happened to anyone?

That happened to me and I didn't know what it was either. I don't know if it was a slight allergy but it also happens to me if I have something with a lot of sugar regardless of quantity. Hmmmmmmmm. Maybe someone can offer some insight because it is a little freaky when it happens.

Yes that is dumping syndrome. It can happen while eating when the food leaves the stomach to fast, or it can happen 2-4 hours after eating and the food left the stomach to fast. The result is from your intestines having to try and digest food that has not been digested enough and you get a spike in glucose in the blood.

I thought dumping didn't happen to sleeve patients...

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I think I will do more research on this. I'm with you OneSassyChick79- I thought it wasn't supposed to happen to sleevers but to people who get a gastric bypass. Interesting.

Dumping Syndrome can happen to anyone. Even people who have not had WLS.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
