It's been almost three weeks since my surgery and I still am not able to eat or drink. The day after surgery my stomach swelled shut and I was givin a pic line and I'm on TPN nutrition. I went back last week and had the barium test to see if my stomach had opened yet it has slightly opened but still can't eat or drink without feeling nauseated or getting sick has this happened to anyone else and how long sis it last for

Yes, it happened to me. PICC line and TPN. At 3 1/2 weeks got a endoscopy and was stretched in esophogus and stomach. Was able to take fluids slowly. Stilled foamed for a while after. Slowly got better. I got off TPN after two months. They wanted to make sure that I didn't have anymore complications. Not an easy road. One step forward and then a step back at times. I also would vomit if I drank or ate to fast. I am now month off TPN and doing well. Last week I finally felt like myself. Hang in there. The swelling will eventually go down. TPN will give you the nutrition you will need to heal after surgery. I pray for a quick healing for you.

You can thank pill junkies for that. They run in ERs looking for a fix making it an insane chore for those of us who need the stronger meds to get them. And dilaudid is a very common street drug here. Since you're admitted they should give you something stronger. This is a situation where you have to be the squeaky wheel!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
