Newbie Needing Some Advice...

Recommended Posts

HI...I have been viewing this forum for some time now and have finally decided to post :-)

I was sleeved on Oct 8th, so I am 11 days out and down 25lbs! However I am having a lot more trouble with the post op diet than I ever anticipated and was hoping for some advice and support today. My pre-op diet was normal healthy low fat foods...but for the last 2 weeks Ive been on Clear Liquids + Protein Shakes. and OMG I want to eat something already!!! I am having so much trouble getting even a portion of the Protein shakes in as well. So last night I caved and had 3 tiny bites of a meatball...not my proudest moment! I really hope I didnt screw anything up! It went down fine and stayed down. Any advice or support is welcomed  Thanks....

When I was 2 weeks out I couldn't drink a full Protein Shake either, takes time, your body is healing! Just drink what you can and stop! My best friend was Soups, yogurt etc!

Avasmommy- you're going to get many different answers on this :)

Welcome to the board and Congrats on your recent surgery.

What stages did your Dr give you? I believe at two weeks I could start full liquids such as blended Soups with no chunks

Yogurt with no fruit

At 4 weeks I could start soft foods like apple sauce consistency.

Your best answer is going to come from your surgeons office :) just because on here we all have different phases.

Not sure why lol

There isn't an universal diet *yet*

This is temporary and will allow you to heal so treat yourself good and follow your surgeons guidelines :)

Post Op diet is 2 weeks clear liquids + Proteins, week 3 full liquids...thats all she gave me because she wants another $200 from me for the rest of the diet which I find is absurd so I have just been doing my research and figure week 4 should be pureed foods, then soft and finally normal.

I am just having do many doubts...wondering why I didnt just lose weight "normally" and why did I do this... hope I get out of this funk soon!

That is soooo normal!! We all felt that way. It is so hard and emotional during that 6 weeks of healing. I promise you, it will only be temporary. You're life won't be like this forever. This time period is to heal so it takes a lot. It's okay to feel doubts. You will feel good again and you will be so very happy.

Yes my 3rd phase was weeks 4-6 soft foods

Phase 4 weeks 7-3months regular moist ground cooking so basic foods just not raw veggies and not tough meats

3 months + and your home free and getting skinny :))))

At 2 weeks I was at the same phase you mentioned...

Weeks 2-3 full liquids

You know what helped me at that stage

Black Beans boiled in chicken broth

Then mash them or blend them real good

Then strain them

Add a spoon of sour cream

some picante sauce minus the chunks

It really hit the spot...

Hope this helps..

And oikos vanilla yogurt is pretty good too :)

Those first few weeks are tough!! I promise you it gets better and you'll be loving your sleeve in no time. It may take a couple of months before you really start feeling normal again, but until then every day will be a little easier than the day before.

As far as the meatballs go, you probably didn't do any harm. If you tolerated them fine it's highly unlikely that you did any kind of permanent damage. That being said, don't take any chances. Follow your surgeon's recommendations as closely as you can. You don't want to risk a leak this early out.

Just hold on a little longer, you'll be feeling more comfortable and confident in no time! :)

I was on mushies by day 8, so as long as you chewed really well, you can rest assured you did no damage.

I'm scheduled for 11/23. I'm going to stock the house with supplies first. Has only one used baby food? I know it sounds weird but it is soft in consistency.

Good luck, I am also having my sleeve on the 23rd too.

My plan was 2 days clear liquids, 7days full liquids, 7 days puréed, 14 days soft. So I was basically 16 days out when I started soft foods, I had a half a meatball and it was fine.

All of the post-op diets vary but I think you are probably ok :-)

I was going crazy just on 7 days of full liquids. Eating a variety of Soups, mixing in sour cream on occasion for flavor and different Protein Drink flavors seemed to all help a lot.

Good luck!

I just had my sleeve on the 20th of October. My diet is clear liquid for 2 weeks, next is full liquid diet for 2-4 weeks, then puree/baby food for 4-6 weeks after and finally around week 10 I can have chicken :*) I will probably try baby food because I think it will be easier then blending everything.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
