Fiddleman 4,376 Posted October 19, 2012 It might be to help people be more successful even though it may not be medically required. 1 Ms skinniness reacted to this
Ms skinniness 3,003 Posted October 19, 2012 You are so right..... All my docs treat me like I have the R N Y. Well I don't. I don't have a pouch, I have a stomach that's reduced by at least 85%. My intestines are all there and accounted for. Yep. However though, I do like eating the way I do. It has helped me be very successful in my weight loss. I love my skinniness now..... I have periods of time when I just want to sit those doctors down and share my insight with them. I will continue to eat like this forever..... 1 enigmachik reacted to this
ArcusX 216 Posted October 19, 2012 Severe GERD = no sleeve. Also, if sweets are a real issue, RNY may be recommended, because you can't tolerate sweets as you can with VSG. Those are the big differentiators as I understand them.
bkz3 17 Posted October 19, 2012 Well, from what I understand, they've been doing the "sleeve" procedure for a LONG time but not for weight loss, it was for patients that had stomach cancer, and/or bad stomach ulcers, and I'm not sure at what point they started doing it as a procedure strictly for weight loss, but from what I understand they haven't been tracking it for research purposes until the last 5 years. It takes that long to see how successful people really are with it, and what makes it successful, etc. I know my bariatric nurse that I saw after surgery (she has the sleeve as well), told me that she had a "dumping" incident, and it surprised me because one of the "pros" to the sleeve vs. the rny is that we weren't supposed to get that, but now after paying attention to sleeve patients for research, they find it can happen. So, I don't know if I"m just rambling, or making any sense at all, but I think they try and keep some of it the same as far as diet goes because they are learning new things all the time I'm sure. We as sleeve patients of course have to be careful what we eat for sure for the first 6 weeks and some times longer because of the risk of leaks.
