No Vitamins Or Supplements Til Puree Stage

Recommended Posts

I've read several posts where people take vitamins/supplements right after surgery. My Nut. has me taking them again at stage 3-puree. I miss the sublingual B12-without caffein I could feel the difference energy-wise and I had to stop taking vit/supplements 3 weeks Pre-op. Does anyone know why the stoping and restarting? 

I came home from the hospital with instructions to take 2 chewable multi-vitamins daily (I use Flintstones Complete), and chewable Calcium (I take a 3X a day version).

As with everything, however, everyone's program seems to have a different approach. Best bet is to follow what your particular nutritionist recommends, even if its different from everybody else on VST.

Best of luck!

Laura

Ask your nut where she gets the information that supprts what she is telling you to do - and where you can reference that information your self.

I was also told no Vitamins until the pureed stage...it is amazing how different Drs have different rules and preop diets.

I did liquid Vitamins and the sublingual B12 even when still on liquids and was told that I would be fine doing without the horse pills (calcium) until later.

I do hope everyone is taking calcium citrate as we don't absorb the other Calcium types as well.

I see there are chewable Calcium supplements-how are they? Does anyone use 'Bariatric Advantage' brand? My dr. sells that brand via his web site. I thought it was 'sketchy' so I never ordered from it. Now I see BA carries chewables which I assume may be hard to find. Anyone?

I was sleeved on the 15th of Oct. I was told to start my Vitamins and regular prescriptions As soon as I got home. I take 2 Centrum chewable a day and 2 chewable calciums. I purchased both at Walgreens.

I was told the stopping before surgery had something to do with the anesthesia. I didn't research it though. I just followed the rules they set. I wasn't expecting to be able to take them right after surgery, but they said yes, day two after the leak test.

Because some Drs give you enough in your IV to sustain you for at least a couple weeks post op. some must not- but mine did. Stuff is WAY too hard to get down right after surgery :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
