Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Went for my first fill today - Dr. Mary Hewitt in Baytown is a family doc who is banded and was trained by Dr. SPivak to do fills...She was totally awesome! So much so that I am going to make her my PCP - one stop shopping!! Whoooweee! Totally awesome and tells it from experience.

Dr. Spivak is who I am considering having the operation with. How is it going? Was it difficult after your surgery? What were your initial experiences right after your surgery?

so you really like this doctor? and she is family practice? i have tried several doctors around here and i just haven't found one that i really like alot. and alot of them don't know anything about the lap band. i was just banded by dr. spivak in august and having a doctor that understands about this would be great.:biggrin1:

Yup - I like her a lot - she's forthright and totally down to earth - doesn't beat around the bush and talks to you like you have a brain and are NOT a collection of ailments...her having the band is obviously a major plus, but I like that she's a normal human being and not some 'god-like' doctor on a power trip.

You are about my weight. I am 200. How has your experience been on the lapband?

My experience has been pretty positive so far...I had my first fill 10/6, and I can't eat much, but I am losing, so am liking that...

I just saw your posts today and was surprised to see that a doctor in Baytown is doing fills. I had my surgery by Dr. Spivak in March. My weight loss has really slowed and I know I need a fill, but Spivak's office only does them before 1:00 p.m. daily and I need an afternoon appointment because of work. Does Dr. Hewitt use the x-ray machine when she does the fills? I have 1.8cc in a 4cc band and I have lost 52 pounds so far. I started out in a tight size 22 and now in a size 16, but I think I'm ready to go down a little more.

Thanks. I guess I'll give her office a call next week. I need the fluro because of a medication I have to be able to swallow so I can't allow my fill to become too tight for it to get through. Thanks again for the info.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
