4 Weeks Post Op Hard Time Getting Food In

Recommended Posts

I'm 4 weeks post op and having a hard time getting in enough Protein calories and fluids. If I eat chicken I can eat a 1/4 of a chicken breast and I'm done. And that's if it doesn't get stuck I'm averaging 400 to 500 calories a day. And fluids are only 36 to 64ozs I have stalled as well I can't seem to eat as much as I did to start with. I'm backed up i haven't had a BM in a week and a half but I feel like I need to. Any advice would be appreciated Lloyd

Well, I think the fact that you're "backed up" has a lot to do with the limited amount you can eat and drink as well as the stall. Everyone stalls - don't stress about that - stay away from the scale. I recommend moving back a stage from solids to mushies and definitely find yourself a laxative or stool softener - find out what your doc suggests!

I agree with Circa. Find a laxative. My hospital gave me a bag of meds to take home which included a bottle of lactulose for just in case, so it must be a common problem.

Lloyd make sure that your chicken is soft. I am eaing thighs and cook them in the slower cooker. I then kind of make a "pulled chicken". After you measure out your 2 ounces of chicken make sure you eat very slowly, just a little on your fork and chew well, you shouldn't have any problems. I use Miralax for Constipation or you might try Milk of Magnesia as it normally works very quickly for me.

I am glad you asked the question, because I am 3 days post op and looking for the same information.

How long post op was it before you started having bowel movements again? I was always "regular"...at least once a day. I am 4 days post op and nothing yet. I am starting to have some gas that I am not so sure I want to trust, but still nothing. Not cramping or anything, so I believe everything is fine...just curious as to how long after surgery it took for everyone else?

It was over wk post op for me. I had to take milk of magnesia, stool softner, and benefiber. No I take stool softner 2x daily. Still no regular BM.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
