Pcp Appt. For Surgery Clearance

Recommended Posts

so I have my appt. with my doctor to clear me for surgery. I scheduled it the morning of my nutritionist appt. so I could just take one whole day off. My doctor is very supportive of this surgery for me, but my doctor's office called yesterday to tell me they needed to reschedule. when I told them my surgery was on Nov. 6 they asked if I minded seeing someone else in the practice. I said I was fine with that.

I'm sure it will be fine-I've just never seen this new doctor I'm going to see. My doctor knows me and knows my struggle with weight & even has his own weight struggles. Again - I'm sure it will be fine - I'm just a little nervous.

I was forced to see a doctor that I had never seen before for surgical clearance. He knew exactly why I was there and couldn't have been nicer. My surgeon's office had put together a package of test results so he wasn't completely blind. It all worked out great.

Email your doctors nurse or assistant and explain your concerns, and ask in regards for you being willing to see another doctor for such an event, and in light that it was nto you who rescheduled but him, to please urge to the doctor you will be seeing the importance of the approval, and that you cannot have a negative answer based on his not understanding your needs.

I would (but this is me) ask if your regular doctor could not just issue an approval, you go not need the appointment, justthe approval - offer to pay a "fee" for his time.

Thanks for your responses. I'm sure it will be fine. Some of my labs the surgeon ran were slightly off but I know why. My cholesterol was slightly elevated at 201 but in March it had been 176 - but I spent the month of August - right before I had the blood work done- eating out a lot at restaurants I won't be able to go to for a while so that wasn't really unexpected. With the higher fat content of restaurant foods I actually thought it might be worse than it was. My triglycerides were pretty high though - they had never been that high before - but again I think it was from eating out. All of that should be cleared up after the surgery with the new eating I will be doing. I've actually really calmed down on the eating out over the last month and this week - before my NUT appt and the start of my liquid diet - I've been eating pretty clean and pretty healthy with the exception of (literally) 3 small bits of a sweet treat - and 2 small bags of ruffles. Over the weekend I hope to be able to stick with 2 Liquid Protein meals and one regular meal of chix & veggies - so I'll be ready to start that liquid diet on Wednesday.

Thanks again for the words of encouragement.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
