Approved! Now Need Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

OK! So I did the 6-month medically supervised diet, and I got my psych and Nut clearance in a week. Then my surgeon's office called me to tell me I was approved and we set the date--Jan 14th. So far so good. Then she said I didn't lose the 30 lbs. that my doctor said I should lose. This makes sense, exept he never told me I needed to lose weight, just that I'd do a 2 week liquid diet right before surgery. But now there's a number attached! Urgh!

I've been on Weight Watchers since Sept 1st and am down 4 lbs. from when I saw the surgeon in March. Now I have this number I feel like I have to achieve. I understand it will make surgery easier and it's a step in the right direction. I'm worried I won't get where he wants me to be.

I'm planning to start Mefifast on 11/1, then start the liquids on 1/1. Will it work? What Protein does everyone use and like? Ugh! So many things to consider now that I'm approved! I just want to get it right, you know?

Thanks for listening!

HI there!

Congrats on setting your date! I wasn't give a specific number to lose, but wanted to drop as much as possible before my surgery on Nov. 6. I was doing weight watchers and doing good... for Weight Watchers, One or two pounds a week, which under normal circumstances would be fine. I altered my diet to more of a "sleeve" mentality. Protein, first and foremost, then veggies and I tried to really limit all carbs. I loaded up on Protein Shakes , sugar free pudding, cheese sticks and bottled Water to stay on track and have lost more than 30lbs in two months. I think for me, the key is cutting the carbs. I found I like the Pure Protein brand of shake/powder. The pre-made shakes contain up to 35gm protein, only 4 grams of Carbs and very low fat.. Starting the day with protein has helped curb my appetite.

Good luck!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
