Day 14 Post Op Hospitalized For Leak!

Recommended Posts

So I am at Dr Office for follow up on my latest cat scan...currently have a low fever and my picc line is oozing yellow Fluid but not stinky so no one seems to know what it is. Anyone with picc line had this happen? Keeping fingers crosses for good news but my "happy thoughts" are dwindling fast! Wish he'd hurry up already!

Good news, last test showed no leak....they took my PICC line out and I am on all liquids now. Can't believe how long this healing takes, after not eating or drinking for 6 weeks, I feel like my taste buds have changed. Having a hard time getting enough fluids just like after my surgery but hopefully this will pass quickly?? I am excited to be off the TPN! Surgery Sept 27th and on TPN was maintaining my weight, I've lost 11 lbs since they took it out!

I'm glad you are on the mend! My palate/taste buds took a month to recover and it still isn't what it was for wine.

HI - Glad to hear you are okay. I had a leak too and was in hospital for 8 weeks. I was in ICU on a ventilator after the first surgery. I had other complications from the leak too, plural effusions, my lung collapsed etc I had four additional surgeries, twice to put in the nasal gastric tube which didn't work either. I ended up with a PICC line and TPN for 8 weeks. I cried a lot, probably from about week 5 onwards actually. I hated hospital, the sounds and smells. I am so pleased that you are now leak free :) It is really hard initially but it does get better (when people told me this I thought they were liars though lol). Just do what you can and challenge yourself every day. I am now 7 weeks out since the test showed there was no leak. Some days are still tough...but nothing like what it was at the start.

Good luck!! Cheers, Lila

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
