Day 14 Post Op Hospitalized For Leak!

Recommended Posts

Praying for a quick recovery for you. I am two weeks out today, does anyone think it's because we can finally eat a little more? This morning I ate a scrambled egg and it was not enjoyable. I felt like I was going to puke it up but I didn't. I'm kinda scared to eat. In the hospital I got the hic-cups and the RN told me if I got a mild case it was just gas BUT if I couldn't stop the hic-cups for a length of time I probably had a leak. I don't think I had a leak test. How do they do this?

Leak tests are typically diagnosed with an xray with contrast dye (which you drink or is ingested) which they watch travel through your body.

I think your RN might be on crack...leaks and hic-cups are not related that I know of, and given a leak almost killed me Im pretty up to date on leaks. It's not a symptom any doc said to look for...Leak symptoms are illness, fever (can be slight) weakness, general feeling of unwell, vomiting, pain on the left side, can be intestinal issues, depending on how the leak is effecting your body (in some it goes up to the lungs and in others it effects lower organs). Believe me, if you have a leak you are ILL :) Don't worry about your hic-ups! I know for me, that's a sign I'm full oddly. I read others have the same reaction.

I didn't hic-up once in the 45 days of care for a leak I had.

BTW...I had my scrambled egg today and it was heaven. Try adding about a table spoon of Water to your egg and mix it up with a wisk, then serve with the "sauce" of your choice (some like hot sauce, I like ketchup). Keeping some extra moisture with the egg will make it go down way easier, and an egg mixed with water fluffs up better. STOP scrambling when the eggs are formed but still shiny. Do not cook til they are all dull colored...this will be harder to eat! Get it out of the pan right away. It takes seconds to over cook a single egg.

Do not mix in milk. Think of what milk does when cooked with an egg? Custard....it firms up a scrambled egg. (I learned this secret from a wonderful french chef and it makes a world of difference in a good scrambled egg).

I have a leak, the lucky portion so far is that an air or gas bubble has formed outside the leak. So far...fingers crossed...the stuff going into the stomach leak out into the bubble and "seem" to be going back into the stomach. Hopefully it remains that way until it heals.

It's amazing how hungery you get when not eating for 4 days. You'd think the nutrition being pumped in would al least help curb some hunger!!!!!!!!

I really hope your bubble maintains the contents that are leaking and then going back inside, this may prevent internal damage. I really hope you get through this and that your body heals itself as quickly as possible. You are not alone, there are many here who really care and will be easy to give you the support you need as you get through this.

Take care!!!

Good news from Dr! The test showed more improvement than they had expected so he is letting me go home tomorrow with my picc line and continued IV nutrition for a couple weeks. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers, doc says if there was a leak to choose from this is the one you want....I have to say tho I am really tired of listening to and feeling my stomach growl.....

YEA! It's nice to have the gift of a well behaved leak I guess ;) I'm so glad you are going home! The hospital is no place for sick people!

LOL We can work through this together :) What's for dinner? heh heh I actually need to go shopping for real (or not totally) food! I love cottage cheese so I'm very excited I get to add that to my boring choices!

Over the weekend I'm hosting (with my DH) a management retreat for folks we work with. I organized the menus around my possible ability to eat fish and other soft foods LOL so I was happy to be cleared.

Hey sweetie... I've had a leak (3/2012... long story).... if you need a friend, please feel free to hit me up. But do yourself a favor.... remain positive. It's not easy, but you can get through this.

And oh btw, someone asked... stats are this occurs to 1-3% of the population, depending on the study you reference.

Praying for you! Best of luck, always... xx Stephanie

Iggy...I totally understand the limitations and difficulties working in the internet domain, my thoughts are personal, I would like to think that behind our posts lie real human beings who form alliances and friendships and hence reaching out to you with no games or alterior motives.

On another topic I made eggfaces's egg bites and they can be eaten round the clock. I made a chicken enchilada flavored bite with poached chicken, green enchilada sauce, jack cheese and black olives. Yum-o.

This presidential debate is driving me bonkers.

Ok I've hi-jacked a thread. Don't want to lose touch. You've been thru a lot and I care.

Glad to hear this news..going home is paramount to getting ones bearings, and with the love of family and friends, hopefully you will have the support you need to get better.

Unfortunately the stomach growling becomes an ordinary side effect of our new little tummy's. I'm 6 months out and mine is still growling!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
