Emotional wreck and food portion size

Recommended Posts

Hello All,:help:

Sorry for the long post but mainly what I want to know is there a book I can buy that talks about common size for bandster patients that don't make them sick? I have idea but since I got sick once I am really worried about eating to much not that I can eat much yet but just wanting to do everything right.

How are you doing? I am doing okay but an emotional wreck today I feeling better physically I even getting hungry now. Even though Mike has been good to me He hurt my feelings today and I know he did not mean too we took back a friend for our roommates to Atlanta so it was a long trip. I finally last night was able to shower by myself and can do those things for the most part myself but they stopped at McDonalds. Since there was 3 of us we had to take our Taurus instead of my pickup truck and it is still real hard for me to get out of the truck much less the car. When we stopped he did not make sure I could get out of the car before I knew he it he was inside the restaurant I still was not out of the car yet and that hurt me. Don't get me wrong I know he has to eat and I am fine with that it just that he did not stop to make sure I got out first. I know that sounds petty maybe but it really hurt I know he is supportive of this so don't get the wrong idea I don't think he thought about it really. This was about a 4 hour trip and he made sure I was okay well riding but never asked if I needed anything now granite I can't get anything at McDonalds which is alright with me I know I am very limited what I can have. He never asked what could they get for me they may sure they ate so and I had to ride in a car that smelled like McDonalds Breakfast for over 45 minutes the person we drove back to Atlanta just ate and ate and I am not being judgmental about that at all it is a mental thing for me it smelled so good I did not know what to do but feel down and crabby. Its not their fault I made the decision and I am so glad I did as we traded food for something far more important which was our health and life. We are learning to use food to fuel our bodies and not live for food. Have you went through anything like this. Today is the first day I have been hungry and I get satisfied for a little bit and than seem hungry again.

Do you have any suggestions to help me I need them today? I know Mike cares very much I am also so scared of getting sick again that I aint sure how much I can eat or what would be considered a safe bandster portion side so I stay on the cautious side?

do you have any idea on portion sizes I think there is education class that I need to attend but not until after I see the surgeon next Tuesday.

Such as what is a safe portion say for the following

OR is there a book I can buy please help me?

Sherbet how much is safe?

Chicken broth?

Pudding?

Jell-O?

Some of these things I am not eating yet but can try starting Friday such as

Mashed potatoes (Thin)

Grits (Thin)

Pureed Cottage Cheese

Applesauce

Pureed Soft Fruit

than just a few more

These I can't have for another 3 to 4 weeks

Finely Chopped chicken, Turkey, Fish, pork lean ground beef

Chopped Cooked vegetables (What kind)

Hot Cereal

Soup how much

Hard cheese what is a considered a hard cheese?

Soft Scrambled Eggs

Low Fat yogurt?

Any thing else you feel that would help me to know food. I am so happy I am feeling better diarrhea has started to set in but I am okay with that lol at least it waited till we got home lol

I am down to 317 lbs so that is great as the nbr keeps reducing. I know this is stuff i have to deal with and mike has too but thought I would talk to someone who is going through the same thing. What does your Wife do about eating? I don't expect the world to stop eating but I still want to be included in things and thought about hey what does he need or what can we do to include him its not that hard in my opinion and I would do that for him or anyone I know that is trying to improve their health.

Now that I have rambled I hope you are having a good day. Tomorrow will be better and I am glad that I had this emotional wreck well I was still off of work so to speak. So I can get a hold of my emotional and deal with it more productive than just getting crabby at the world lol

Talk to ya soon. Any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Larry

I'm sorry you're a bit of a wreck, but as a bandster I think you have to anticipate and deal with your needs not being first and foremost on everyone's minds. If my significant other had failed to help me out of the car I would have just told him off and then been done with it. Other people are going to live their lives, eat what they want to and not worry about you and sometimes it might put your nose out of joint but you can just look out for yourself. If you were hungry why couldnt you just say "can we swing by somewhere else so that I can get something to eat too?". You dont have to sit there and stew about it in silence. Just speak up for yourself.

As to how much to eat, well you cant learn that from a book. Commonly soon after surgery you probably shouldnt be eating more than a cup at a time so measure out what you're eating. But the biggest skill you need to develop is to learn to listen to your body - when you're getting full stop - BEFORE you're stuffed. YOu really need to develop that skill. There isnt a hard and fast rule, the band doesnt work that way, its individual for everyone, although a lot of doctors seem to like rules for their patients. But nothing necessarily happens if you eat more than what your doctor's rules say unless you're eating more than you can cope with and then you will be sick.

So during the recovery period make sure to try to keep it to a cup or less OR stop before that if you're getting full and then you have to practice listening to your body. A book cant tell you that, what's OK for you at one meal might be too much at the next.

Larry, Mike might have been trying to be supportive by not asking you if wanted anything. Judging by how confused you are about what you can and can't eat, im sure Mike is equally or even more confused or unknowing in this regard. Jachut had it right, everyone's amount they can eat is differant. Just start out very slow! Drink a sip at a time and space out your sips.. like take one drink.. wait 20 seconds.. take another drink etc. I don't know where you got the band but your surgeon should have made sure you were more prepared than you are. Im sorry you didn't get more education! I feel bad for you. But now you should spend some serious time reading through the threads on this website, it can really help you. Consider this site your 'book'. Good luck to you. Make sur eyou are drinking premixed protien shakes at first. You want to get at least 65 grams of Protein per day. Welcome to LBT!

HI,

Well, Friday is the big day! I will be banded by Dr. Sprvak in Houston. I am very excited and a little nervous. Has anyone done any counseling after the surgey, just to keep on track or figuar out why we got ourselves to this situation in the first place? I will do anything and everything to be very successful in my life change! Are there any support groups in the Sweeny, West Columbia, Lake Jackson area?

Say a prayer for me Friday morning. I'll let you know how it goes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
