Hi Everyone....I did not know where to post this. I am 48 yo and am having trouble making the decision as to what type of WLS I want to have. I have finished all my qualifying tests and have my pre-op appt Tuesday. My doc lets us make the choice to whether we have the Sleeve or Bypass. There are pros and cons to each. I am 5'7" and weigh 282. I need to be about 140 to be in a range that feels good for me. So that means I have to lose about 140 lbs. My head is in the right place to be successful...I just am having problems deciding. What helped you decided? Any help will be very appreciated!!!!

I initially went in to see the doctor for the band since it is reversible but on his advice I am opting on the sleeve. I have 93 lbs to lose and I think I can do that with the help of the sleeve. I didn't think I needed the malabsorption of the RNY to get to goal. I'm cautious about the RNY because I have heard of malnouishment issues with it. That is why I opted for the sleeve.

I chose the sleeve because it is not as severe as RNY, yet can yield the same results over time. I like the fact that nothing inside me changed except the size of my stomach. RNY, with its rerouting of innards ruled it out for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
