Carbonated Beverages Stretch The Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I heard, what I hope is a a rumor that carbonated beverages, diet soda, champagne, fizzy waters etc can cause your sleeve to stretch. Is there any truth to this? I do not have a NUT, so if one of you could ask yours, I would really appreciate it! I do not drink them on a routine basis but enjoy one once in a while, but will STOP if this is true! Cheers!

You will get plenty of various answers to this question. My doc say no carbonation ever, as it will stretch the sleeve.

I have always questioned the rationale of carbonation stretching the sleeve. Pre-sleeve, it we drink fizzy drinks, we burp. Post-sleeve, when I drink a Diet Coke, I burp. I do not drink them in the volume I did before being sleeved, but my restriction is still intact 18 months out. That is my various answer to your question. :) Kathe

Yep.. half on here beleive it will strech the sleeve and the other half dont. Pop makes some people really uncomfortable because of the carbonation. Some are just fine. Some drink from straws and some dont for the same reason. You just have to decide what you believe. Search some past posts it may help. I personally have a diet coke about one a week. No problems for me.

I don't believe it would and even so, your stomach before surgery stretches and goes back. I know when I did a liquid diet for almost three months, when I first started eating real food again, I couldn't eat much of anything. I also know when I have been a naughty bad when I can eat a lot and not feel as full.

Now take away all the stretchy part after surgery and pretty much I think there isn't much to stretch out. Even if it did, if you have learned to eat right and use your "tool" it shouldn't matter much anyway, right?

I have had some soda, but I pour it out into a glass and stir it and flatten it a bit out of paranoia. I sip it and like another poster said "burp" just like before. I find it's a nice treat, but it would take me all afternoon at work to finish a glass (1 can).

My rational tells me no, sodas won't stretch your sleeve.

Sodas are considered by many surgeons to be ok if they are allowed to go flat first. This tells me that all the acids & poisons in the soda isn't a major concern. So the problem is the carbonation itself. Carbonation is nothing but carbon dioxide. Since your body produces carbon dioxide and there is carbon dioxide in you're blood at all times I don't see how it can cause a reaction in your stomach tissue that wouldn't already be happening anyhow.

All that being said, why would you want to put those poisons into your body?

I don't see the stretching being an issue, but I had a serious soda "addiction" pre surgery. I HAD to have at least one every day. I'm only 4 months out from surgery and have had cravings for them. I know, though, that if I have one I won't be able to stop myself so I avoid them anyway.

My surgeon said he took almost all of the stretchy part of the stomach out and what is left is very non-stretchable (is that a word lol). He did say to wait at least 3 months if I wanted carbonation because it is not good to have the pressure on the staple line while it is still fresh. He also said no sugary drinks, diet only.

Some people on here refer to a utube video where a man is putting a balloon over a carbonated drink and showing it blowing up the balloon but this isn't realistic since the stomach isn't a closed balloon. Believe me you will definately burp any air out of the tummy.

Ultimately you have to decide for yourself what to do. I do drink coke zero.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
