I suspect that a lot have cheated on it. The most important part of those pre-op diets (for those whose docs require them - many don't) is that they be low carb to help improve the physical condition of the liver when they are working around it doing your sleeve; your liver doesn't care whether you have been sucking liquids or eating meat and veg. I have yet to find a satisfactory rationale for liquid over solid diets pre-op.

I've been wondering this too. I just found out at my NUT appt. that my dr. does a 2 week liquid diet before surgery, and I can't help but think of everything I've read and how drs. are all over the place w/ what they require. One week, two weeks, a month, a few days, ack! I wish I knew exactly what my own liver needs, so I can say "okay, it's this, and nothing else."

What I know about the liver, is this, absolutely NO sugar or carbs at all. My doctor said to do the liquid but if I was hungry to eat meat, eggs or cheese. This will still shrink the liver Pre-surgery.

If you have to cheat, eat meat. Lol. :)

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I am doing pretty good with the cottage cheese, yogurt and Jello and Protein Shakes and the times I have eaten solid food it was chicken, steak and string cheese! Thank you for letting me know its the carbs and sugar that will interfere with this process to shrink the liver. It doesnt give me permission to do it and I will still stay on track as much as possible. As for how many days I was told today in my pre op class that it depends on your bmi.....i am starting out at 400 lbs.... what a big number and I am ashamed to say it but it is what it is...

Thrust I would like to say that I think it has a lot to do with disaplan and commitment for us not the doc. I just think because this is so much more than about weightloss. The greater question we should all ask ourselves as we go through the process "how committed are we to ourself?" Good luck. "To thy ownself b true" forgot who said that.

I have yet to find a satisfactory rationale for liquid over solid diets pre-op.

My pre- & post-op diet had to be bought from my surgeon's office for nearly $500. That might have something to do with it.

During my pre-op diet I had three "cheat" bites. A tiny morsel of lamb, a teeny bit of steak, and a nibble of turkey. I think it kept me feeling human.

I am on Day 6 of my 2 week liquid fast... it has been hard, but so far, I have not cheated (knock wood)... I really thought I would, but I am kind of an all or nothing girl... I am either ALL in or ALL out...I am afraid if I cheat once, my will power will fall like a Jenga game... *sigh*

Yes!! I was craving my pickle fix and couldn't help it, I ate 2 (3), but it didn't seem to hurt too much, other than make me retain Water. I was afraid to try anything else, for fear of having to face the doctor on my pre op appointment and try and explain why I hadn't lost any weight :) after two weeks of liquid diet!! Hang in there, girl, you can do it! Ronee

It's already been answerd already but I'll chime in too, I started my liquid diet the day after Thanksgiving (in the USA) and simply HAD to have another piece of pumpkin pie so i ate one. No harm will come of it. Another benefit to the diet besides the liver shrinkage is keeping the colon from packing up with solids, post-op many people are constipated due to the surgical trauma and anesthesia reaction. It is NOT pleasant having to PUSH post-op so this is a real benefit.

So try and limit the cheating and you'll be OK.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
