BigChrisATX 19 Posted October 12, 2012 I'm about one month post op and can eat normal foods now. My bariatric nurse advised me to stay away from drinking regular milk (whole, 2%, 1%, skim) and dariy products (with the exception of light cheese) because with the sleeve patients tend to be come lactose intolerant. I have read posts here where people have incorporated dairy in their diet. Were any of you told this as well after your surgery? And are any of you now lactose intolerant because of it? Banned member 320 Posted October 12, 2012 I drink whole milk and haven't had any problems. I plan to buy skim milk or 1% milk when I go grocery shopping again. I haven't had any problems with milk
Threetimesacharm 1,400 Posted October 12, 2012 I used lactose free milk and still had an issue. Yogurt and cheese though are fine for me.
robynluevano 85 Posted October 12, 2012 I don't have any issues with milk. I'm almost 6 weeks post op
Skittle 26 Posted October 12, 2012 Only thing that bothers me is milk. cheese and yogurt are fine, but after a fourth of a cup of any milk I start to feel it. It really just sits funny.. Not really nauseous.. Just heavy in my stomach. The nurses told me it would get better with time. I am 9 weeks postop btw.
aliandrews 98 Posted October 12, 2012 I have issues with milk. I seem to be okay with cheese and yogurt though.
Fiddleman 4,376 Posted October 12, 2012 Yes, it did for me at the beginning. Everyone is different. I could not tolerate milk for the first 2 months, but now seem ok with it. I have got used to drinking soy milk ( lite - 70 calories), so only drink milk if needing to have a shake for Breakfast where soy is not available. Almond milk is good too. They are both sweet tasting, but I guess without the sugars.
SleeveShelly 75 Posted October 12, 2012 I had my sleeve on 9/12 and I have been trying to mix 1% milk with my Protein Shakes with milk. Just today I realized that is what was killing my stomach. I thought it was the Protein. It is not good. I get really sweaty, and get bad cramps and diaherea. It is horrible
BizTraveller 101 Posted October 12, 2012 I developed lactose intolerance about 6 weeks post-op. I noticed my Premier shakes were consistently sending me to the bathroom 30 minutes after drinking them. I have no problems with Greek yogurt, and I eat plenty if that in the hope that I can re-seed my gut with the right bacteria. I basically stopped drinking shakes. When I am working or traveling, I find it easier to pack a bag of Jerky or a Quest Protein bar anyway. Getting off shakes has been no big deal. MiniMo 41 Posted October 17, 2012 I dont have problems with dairy products, just ready made protien shakes with milk products in them (especially adkins advantage ). I use skim milk in my powder shakes and food with no problems. But before surgery I had issues with milk and ice cream (especially sugar free ice cream containing sugar alcohol). Weird.... Its easier on your tummy imo and its also less calories than milk. I was sleeved oct 8th and my bms arent as liquidy now. I eat greek yogurt thinned with almond milk and add truvia and pumpkin pie spice for Breakfast. I also add a little yogurt to my shakes. It has good bacteria to help digestion and I think it helps get everything back to normal.
