30 Somethings - Loose Skin After Wls?

Recommended Posts

I am 32 years old and have been overweight for the last 15+ years. I was just sleeved on Oct 2nd. I'm just wondering, from those of you that are already at goal, or close to your goal weight, and have had to lose 100+ pounds, did your skin tighten up at all afterwards, or do you have a lot of loose, saggy skin? (I expect it in my arms, but just wondering about my mid-section, not that I plan on being able to wear a bikini one day or anything....lol). I'm just hoping I have time on my side, a little bit, being in my early 30's. I am being delusional to think it might tighten up a little and not have an "apron"??

You will have some left over but the amount really depends on several factors, all of which you should really do anyway:

Lose in moderation, several to 1-2 lbs a week depending on your size.

Firm and tone...a small routine you can stick to everyday - everyday. This is not the exercize - the treadmill or running or hard core cardio.this is 5-10 minutes of light weights, stretching or yoga, etc...this is what you do everyday to keep your body responding to the changes, to make sure your nutrients and protien go where they need to...this is your good morning kiss to your new body!

Water - plain Water, choke it down.

Stress - get away from it, you produce cortozol, among other things, which affect where you lose your weight and how your facia and dermis react to these changes.

Foods - the type of foods will determine this too.

Meds - this varies sooo much but get with your doctor and see if you have additional supplemental needs based on what you take.

sleep - sleep is so very, very, critical.

trans fat - NONONONONONONONOONONO! it is shownin studies to prematurely age us, diminish brain functions, and make us more susceptible to injury and illness...that includes the saggy skin!

Hope this helps :P

I am curious also, I've lost about 60 pounds in 3 months (I am 29) and definitely notice a lot more jiggle than I expected. That being said I feel so fantastic that I figure I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

I'm 90 lbs down so far and I know I'm going to have to have skin on my stomach even with exercise as I carried A LOT of weight there and previous stomach surgeries. I'm not sure on my arms or chest yet. I don't have any skin on my arm yet, but I have the bat wings now. I workout 4 days a week right now focusing on my thighs, upper arms, and stomach.

I had surgery when I was 28. I have lost about 120 pounds since I began, preop and after surgery. I lost all of that within about 9 months. I have some jiggly skin on my belly and upper thighs. A tiny bit on my upper arms. I have not worked out regularly and I am sure that my tummy would tone up some alond with my arms. Overall though my body looks pretty good for losing 120 pounds! I would say though if you are concerned, do toning exercises. I was jogging for awhile and could see a difference but then I "fell off" the wagon and need to get back on! Oh and I slathered cocoa butter all over myself for the first 6 months, don't know if it helped but I smelled yummy and my skin was always soft!

I am 46 years old, work out every day and have 0, I say again, no loose skin issues. I think it is because I workout and lift wts. I am a gym rat and did not want to have skin issues so I work out religiously. I have lost 70 lbs so far with absolutely no skin issues. Keeping fingers crossed.

You can do things to help like working out and following the advice you are getting here.... But you are either going to have loose skin or not. Its genetics and skin type. You know how people swear by certain lotions to prevent stretch marks durring pregnacy... Well its not going to really help. Look at your mother-- if she has stretch marks from having you-- chances are you are going to have them too. Same concept.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
