Panicking! Has Anyone Had This Issue?

Recommended Posts

So, I'm scheduled to be sleeved in 3 days. My pcp sent me a message last night saying my pre-op blood and urine test shows a bladder infection!!! I've never had one before...and I'm guessing it was caused by the aggressive killing of a bacterial infection they discovered during my endoscopy. It was a bunch of medications (called a Prev PAC). I looked it up and it does show that a UTI can be a side effect. Will this stop the surgery that's scheduled on Monday? I'm freaking out because I'm officially on medical leave after today and the temp they hired to fill in for me started yesterday. I can't change my time off.

Hmm, never heard of anyone being cancelled for a UTI before, so I'm thinking probably not. But the catheter can make you get a UTI anyhow, post-op. And in most places, they will also have you on antibiotics post-op as well, which would also likely address the UTI if it was still going. If you don't have any UTI symptoms, it might not be a really bad one?

I had a UTI before my surgery and my surgeon told me as long as I was on an antibiotic before surgery I would be ok. I didn't get any meds and they still did the surgery. Nothing ever became of my UTI. :)

I was told an elevated white blood cell count would be the only thing that would really throw my surgery, infection wise.

I am not sure if that helps...

Let us know what your doc says!

BUT I had to have at least a portion of my surger no matter what...I was having a tumor removed also.

I had a very low Iron count and my surgery was postponed from 10/1 to 10/23. I had two iron transfusions and my iron is ok now.

Thank you all for responding! I obviously was freaking out. My PCP said that I shouldn't panic and she put me on Cipro, which is an antibiotic that is a 3 day course to cure the bladder infection. So that means that I'll be finished with the course on Sunday night and my surgery is Monday. She also spoke to my surgeon and he said he had no problem with the Cipro as long as I'm done taking it on Sunday and I will be!! Thank god!!

Of course 3 hours later I got my period. 1 week early. LOL. Now I can focus on the fear of the surgery in general! Can't believe 3 more sleeps and then it's happening.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
