Help Please! Pre-Op Vs Post-Op

Recommended Posts

Can someone please help me? I posted a few days ago about the Migraines that I’ve been getting on the pre-op diet and I’ve determined that they’re definitely related to a lack of food (this was figured out by process of elimination – i.e. my Migraine meds have a good amount of caffeine so they weren’t from that and they weren’t responding to my migraine meds but they were definitely migraines and then once I ate rather than drank my meal the headache I was experiencing eased up and went away with meds). I called the nurse at my surgeon’s office to see if it was ok if I followed the guidelines of the pre-op diet (less than 1200 cal, less than 125 carbs, 70-100g of protein) but did it with the addition of lean Protein and low carb veggies and his response was “if you can’t do this now what are you going to do for the two weeks post-op when you have no choice”… I explained that right now I’m working at least 15 hours a day so that I can take off for surgery and for the two weeks post-op that I’m on liquids I’ll be home and can sleep when I have the migraines which is not an option today. He told me that he could not advise me and to email my surgeon, so I did. This morning – two days later – I finally got a response which basically said the same… “what am I going to do post-op” and that he needs to talk to me so that we can discuss this. He did give me approval to add in lean/low carb foods as long as I stick to the guidelines but now he wants to “talk”. I’m concerned he’s going to tell me that he’s not going to do my surgery (which is scheduled for Tuesday) because he doesn’t think I can handle the two weeks of liquids post-op. Is it seriously as hard post-op as it is pre-op to stick to liquids only? If so, how did people who really struggled on the pre-op deal with post-op? Or do they just give up and die young (I’m 30 with 2 school age children and the weight made me sick fast b/c I was never overweight until about 6-7 years ago when my thyroid failed)? I’ve worked really hard to get to this point and I can deal with the headaches if I’m home in bed… I just can’t deal with them doing 15 hours of mental work…

It's a lot easier to follow the liquid diet post op. Your not hungry and your stomach is swollen also. The doc just wants to make sure your going to be successful in the long run. I use to get Migraines before my surgery, and after my surgery, I was fortunate not to have migraines any more. Love it! I hear that your working 15 hours a day and wow, that's a lot of hours. you must be physically exhausted. When are you able to rest. It's really hard to have kids also. Wish you luck and do the best you can to stay on the liquid diet as much as possible. :)

Just be sure it is foods...thing is solid vs. liquid protien should not be producing headaches.

Could it be that eating is still a big enough comfort that it is eliminating enough stress to take the edge off?

Also, where does it hurt?

May I suggest you experement with chewing ice? if it is muscular this will help also.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
