Tmj/lockjaw After Surgery

Recommended Posts

I had surgery Monday and my jaw has been sore since. Caught myself clinching my teeth, as well. Used to but had stopped. Well today, my mouth will not open fully. I researched online and have been using a heating pad on my jawbone to relax the muscles tonight. May need to get a brace to prevent grinding. :(

Did anyone else get tmj after intubation?

Thx

Hi Chad and congrats on the surgery- my Mom got a locked jaw after intubation when she had her hysterectomy. Not common but does happen... Did you get hold of your Doc? They gave her some stuff for it but can't remember what...

I've had TMJ before and it hurts. I thought I had a wisdom tooth coming in. My dentist pulled it out. A week later the pain came back. I felt stupid because I am a massage therapist and it didn't even occur to me it could be TMJ. I started massaging the area and the pain went away within a couple of days.

Here's a picture of the 2 muscles involved. For me I concentrated on massaging the masseter muscle with my fingertips.

I put warm compresses over my jawbone last pm, for a while. Feels less tight and aches less as well today. Will continue today and see what happens and will work on some massage, too. Thank you my friend.

I've been dealing with the same issues. My jaw is always sore and I notice that I'm clinching my teeth constantly. I'll try the massage. Thank you :)

My brother says Mom had a prescription muscle relaxant and we used a heat lamp and she rubbed her jaw muscles with Zambuk.

Hope yours is feeling better.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
