Avwerage Weight Loss - What Are The Numbers?

Recommended Posts

I've seen reports that those with the lapband lose 1-2 pounds per week for the first year.

tatistically speaking, on average, how much weight does an average patient lose with VSG per week in the first year?

It depends. Surely you can guess that someone starting with a BMI of 70 is going to have a faster rate of loss than someone starting at a BMI of 40. There are many factors that go into this. Bottom line is whether or not someone can get to goal weight. From my research, many are able to do it with the sleeve with little to no issues whereas with the band, I read about several issues and many revisions.

Does it really matter if you get to goal in 16 months instead of 12?

Really?

Your weight loss is not level - for me... lots up front and then it slowed down after about 7 months out....

I lost 100# in just over 6 months. Now it is very slow, maybe 1 pound or less a week.

No it doesn't matter to me regarding how fast. I just recall reading somewhere that it's about 3-4 pounds a week.

As you mentioned, sure it varies based on someone's BMI. I started my journey with the lapband but ended up revising to VSG a couple weeks ago. It's one of the best decisions I've made as far as I can tell.

Congrats!

Just keep following the guidelines as close as you can and you will be at goal before you know it.

Thanks. Right now I'm at a stall but I'm just happy not be hungry anymore, nor in pain.

Stalls are a necessary part of the journey. If you weigh yourself once a month, you never see them.

But, if you have to weigh yourself more often ...

Here is how I look at it.

You're going to have stalls. You want your body to have stalls. If your body did not have the ability to go into starvation mode, then, something is not right. Let's say ... on your journey to goal, you are going to have 5 stalls. Well, your in one now, so you only have 4 left!!!

Yea! I can't wait to get to the next one so I only have 3 left!

Pdx- question??? I am 6 weeks out..I stalled at week 3, which lasted 2 weeks. My stall broke & I lost another 3 lbs & went back into another stall... Is that normal? I read you should have a stall around 3 weeks, 3 mos, 6 mos & 9 mos. I hope this doesn't happen more often for me.

I stall all the time...if that is what you want to call it. I can go a week and lose nothing then the next week lose 7lbs. I am just short of 3 months out and have lost 50ish pounds. BMI 38 to 27

Do a site search on stall. There lots. Here is one that I commented on, which I like.

Bottom line ... what is a stall?

What does it mean? Is a stall when you don't lose weight? Don't lose weight for ... a day, a week?

Are you doing this to lose weight or lose fat?

Would you rather lose lose weight everyday and have your clothes fit the same?

If you lose weight one day, but don't lose any the whole week, but are able to walk further with easier effort and able to drink more Water than you were last week, are you stalled?

Weigh yourself once a month and you will never see a stall

Trust me. Ditch the scale. It lies. It measures weight, not fat. What are you looking to lose ... weight ... fat ... your mind?

That's so awesome! I was 254. - 4 days before surgery, 250 day of. Today I am 158. I was sleeved May 15. 5 months almost- and 96 gone. I'm hoping to break 100 very soon, and definitely within the month.

Did you find many drawbacks to losing so much faster than normal? I mean besides lose skin... Did you have any issues? What was your starting weight?

Did your weight loss slow drastically right at the 6 month mark?

:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
