High Sugar Readings

Recommended Posts

Hi Im 5 weeks out and my sugar readings are still high. The reason I had this op was to lower my sugars,My Dr said give it 6-8 weeks and see if they will come down.

Has this happened to anyone else.

Cheers Julie

How high? I am diabetic as well. My sugars dropped about a week after my surgery to 99-102. The other morning it was 146. I was worried. I called my endocronologist and she told me to stay off my meds unless they went over 160. Because she said my body is changing quickley so therefore my sugar levels are as well.

My sugars haven't leveled out either. Almost 5 weeks out. But they are better and better and I am going to have to cut back on the units because I as 79 this a.m.. I heard with vsg it can take a couple of months. With bypass nothing is absorbed so your blood sugar goes down immediately. WE WILL GET THERE. Don't give up and push the protein! Good luck!

While I hadn't been "officially" diagnosed with diabetes prior to surgery, I was definitely "pre-diabetic." My HgbA1c was slightly elevated (6.7), and my fasting glucose was running between 110 and 115.

At my 3-month post-op check, my HgbA1c was down to 5.6 (perfectly normal), and my fasting glucose was a brilliant 78!

As part of my approach to eating, post-op, I am very careful about the amount of carbs I eat every day. On most days I come in at or below 30 grams (total carbs), but will go higher, if I'm eating things that are particularly high in Fiber. I've been in ketosis for almost 6 months, and am steadily losing weight.

Be patient...and be mindful of what you're eating (in terms of grams of carbs). That strategy has certainly worked well for me. :)

Best of luck!

Laura

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
