What Is The Psych Eval Like?

Recommended Posts

Anyone who has been through it and passed... can you please tell me what to expect?

I read somewhere that someone tried it years ago and was diagnosed with depression---does that mean you can't get the surgery? I also read that they give you a check off list to show how weight has affected you---what is this truly trying to get at? I know it's seeing are you emotionally/mentally ready for surgery, but I'm just scared I won't pass as I do see a Psychologist already for bi-polar (which is in my charts) which has a depressive side to it and currently on meds for that. :- / A little TMI, but I'd just like to know what I'm getting myself into here.

i sat at a computer in a room by myself and answered questions. took about 45 minutes. no big deal. if they do see any areas of concern they just want to address them before surgery. you'll do great!

Mine was two part in the same day. I talked to the psych dr for about 20min and just told her about myself, family relationships, milestones, home life, why i wanted surgery. After that i was in a room by myself to take the written "test" which i believe was called mpi. It's a personality test and if you google there is a full version online to get an idea what it's like.

Was it the 500+ question true/false test? Well I thought my physch said her appt would be an hour... To an hour and a half. I'm expecting an email from her with details--hoping I can just talk, I've taken so many personality assessments before and hate the questions.

I spent 30 minutes talking to the doc about my past history with weight. Not to invasive then put into a room by myself to take a written scan tron fill in the bubbles multiple choice test. Super easy. He called me the next day and told me he was recommending me for approval but my test revealed I might struggle with the strict lifestyle change later due to boredom. :)

I had a diagnosis of depression already. My test was about 90 minutes long, 3 sections 2 "rate on a scale" and one hand written. Eval agreed with my original diagnosis and mandated meds as a condition of surgery. Other than that it was no big deal.

I go through mine tomorrow. I had a 20+ page pack to fill out to take with me. I am going through the VA so it might be a little different. I will post when I get home how it went.

It was easy cheezy. I filled out 3-4 paper tests and did 2 computer tests. I talked with the intern for a while where she asked a bunch of questions about history of mental disorders and weight history. I struggle with depression so she just wanted to make sure I had things planned and in line in case something goes wonky with my meds post op. Not really hard at all.

Thanks for coming back to update. I have my appt tomorrow. She told me it'll be an hour so we'll see... I'll update this post so at least others (pre-op) can see how different this can be.

So I had all my appts today... Whew was 4 hrs total! My psych eval consisted of me filling out some paperwork prior to arrival and then just talking about why I wanted surgery, my family background, obesity in family, etc. That was it.

I just did mine this week. It was with the psych doc that works with the osf weight loss center. They wanted me to go to him cause he knows what NOT to put in a report.....as far as wording. They just want to make sure that we do not have any underlying eating disorders...like bing, bulemia etc. It was an hour long...he made me feel very comfortable....more like a conversation. We talked about my diet history...what I have tried over the years. We talked about my family, parents , children, husband....health, raised where, what they did or do as well as my life history. The hour flew by. He ended it with a talk about how I can acheive long term success and three main red flags to watch for that would alert me to falling into old habits. He gave me the best advice that I have received yet. Relax...they won't commit you! :)

My psych eval took 90 minutes. I took numerous test both true/false and multiple choice. I spoke with Dr. Kriger for 90 minutes. A lot of the questions were repeats. I was worried like you but truly it is nothing to worry about. Just be truthful in your answers and let the psychologist know that you know what the surgery is about and what will happen.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
