I would recommend one, but maybe I was lucky?

I would settle for two. You will have an option IF you can meet their requirements for getting fluids in and keeping them down, along with walking, passing leak and other tests and yadda yadda yadda.

Good luck.

Every surgeon is different and has different methods for VSG.

I was outpatient, no overnight in the hospital. No leak test, no morphine drip, no cathedar, no drain, and no nurses waking me up at night. Took the pain meds once on day three and that was only to sleep. This is no longer uncommon for VSG. More and more US surgeons are progressing towards this practice. Personally for me it worked since I was not a high risk patient. Glad to sleep in my own bed that night.

So - really your surgeon/insurance decides based on their practice. Good question to ask on your next visit. Congrats on your upcoming surgery

My doc requires a two night stay for the most part. But since my mother is going to take care of me post op, I'm hoping I can go home early. She's an ICU nurse and has been a nurse for over 22 years, plus is going to school to be a nurse practitioner. So I think I'm covered. Lol. But again, it's up to the surgeon and I'm gonna follow orders like a good little soldier.

The length of time you spend in the hospital will depend entirely on how you do after surgery, and your surgeon. I had a relatively mild complication immediately following surgery (my sleeve was inflamed so severely that nothing, including Water and the dye used for the leak test, couldn't pass through), and a conservative, concerned surgeon. He kept my NG tube in for an extra 4 days (to allow the inflammation time to resolve), and kept me in the hospital or 6 days. While my situation is NOT "typical," I was, and am, very grateful for the care and concern I received from my surgeon and his team.

My best advice to you...follows your surgeon's advice, and don't sweat an extended stay if he/she feels it is necessary. They won't keep you longer than is medically justified...our insurance system makes sure of that.

Best of luck to you!

Laura

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
