Men: Telling "the Guys" About Your Surgery

Recommended Posts

Ok, that was hilarious and completely believable. In my opinion, I would tell them so they're not shoving alcohol or junk food in your face. Let them razz you all they want, like a previous poster said, they'll be hating it when you're getting all the attention from the ladies. Good luck on your journey.

Forgive me for butting in on the man conversation and perhaps for being inappropriate, but.... if you tell them and they give you a hard time, tell not to be jealous. It removes inches from your waist and adds inches elsewhere. I read that in your secret women haters man club forum:)

Great topic! I am 9 days from surgery and have been having the same thoughts about what I am going to tell friends and family. My buds are all big men like me and will probably be shocked and some may talk smack about it but will most likely understand: blood pressure, CPAP, ankle/knee problems taking more meds than we need to. I will probably struggle with the events where really bad food and drinking are involved more than I will with their initial comments/reactiions.

For now I am going let it ride. Only a few close friends will know until I start losing. I have another procedure that I am having done same time so I have a valid reason for scar, weight loss and being out of work for a week.

Great support here guys, thanks!

I lied.... They all think I'm having my gallbladder removed. =) why tell the truth when a lie is easier.

Nothing wrong with that approach. In the wise words of the immortal George Costanza: "Remember, it's not a lie if YOU believe it"

I told no one and in 6 weeks no one has asked. I've had a couple of comments but they can see the diet I'm on and just assume it's working.

That's guys for you, right? I'm down 30 lbs. since 01/01/12 in prep for my surgery on 01/08/13, and the only friends who have commented, with one exception, have been female.

I have only told close friends to date and they've all been supportive. A group of male work friends invited me out for wings and beer tonight, and as I'm on day two of the preop diet, I declined. They pushed and i told them why. Generally supportive.

I'm gonna tell em what they've heard me say many, many times in the past. "I'm on a diet again". Which is exactly the case.

And I'm sure I'll get the usual jabs like ......."yeah sure.....the Atkins 2 minute diet".......or ......damn, "that means the local Wendy's and pizza Hut are gonna go bankrupt" and I'll chuckle right along with 'em..............I'm sure there will be plenty of legit comments later when they see the results......

As far as the surgery......Guys don't really give a sh*t. In fact, I'll probably show them the five bullet scars where I single handedly stopped a bank robbery and captured a gang of crazed gunmen and saved 20 hostages. .......Yeah.....that's the ticket..

Well I'm six day since my surgery and most of my circle of friends are congratulating me. Had one argument on Diabetes and that was it. Of course I waited till two days prior to tell anyone other than my wife and boss as I did not want to get the hundred monkeys in my head. Little self defence. See how it goes from here.

I'm 10 days post op. Besides my family, I've told about 5 buddies. Some of them had genuine concerns, but all of them said that if I decided to do it, they would be supportive. And they all have been.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
